In 1857 the Lewis came to Coffey County Kansas along with babydaughter Mary, and were perhaps the first white settlers that everlived there. When volunteers were called for the Civil War LewisFoster enlisted in Co. F. 12th Kansas Volunteers. In the fall of 1863he escorted a supply train to Ft. Smith Arkansas. In March they leftFt. Smith for Camden Arkansas and were at battle of Jenkins Ferry,wounded and taken prisoner. Lewes spent 362 days in Andersonvilleprison.
While Lewis was away the family had nothing to eat but corn meal mushwith milk. Numerous bands of indians, smallpox bad. Once Fosterchildren were vaccinated the Grandmother took virus and vaccinated theindians that came to their place. Three fourths of a mile North ofthe Foster farm on the east side of the road was the Bancroft Postoffice. Uriah was Grandmother Foster's mother was Amanda, Uriah'ssister. The Fosters are buried at Prarie View cemetery.
