[1140] "Uncle Al", the 3rd of the 6 brothers was a famous all around Univ.of Kansas athlete and the star half back of the undefeated 1891football team. He built the first telephone exchange in Newton Kansasin 1895 and the first long distance lines between Newton and Wichitaand McPherson. He owned and managed this company until 1907, when hesold out to Bell Tel. In 1912 he bought 80 acres of undeveloped land12 miles east of Sacramento CA., moved his family there. All workedhard, planting the land to walnuts, almonds and grapefruit. but theranch was never the moneymaker he hoped for. It was not in anirrigation district. by 1920, "Als" health was failing (high bloodpressure). Desperately ill, in 1924 he went to BattleCreek Sanitariumbut died shortly thereafter in Morris, Ill. The Champlin Ranch is nowCarmichael, CA., where the mansion for the Governor of Calif. wasbuilt in 1975.- Letter dated Feb. 10, 1966 from Alice R. ChamplinTalbot Shields to Jackson S. Champlin. This lengthy letter contains awealth of reminiscences of the Champlins of that time (1904-1940)
