[1171] Sometime after 1798, Asa suddenly left for Herkimer County, New York.Most of the rest of the family left at the same time but settled inSullivan County instead. Asa's brother, George remained behind atNorth Stonington, Connecticut. He had married Nancy Bentley whosesister gave birth to an illegitimate son - William Bentley. Exactlywho the father was was never publickly acknowledged. Asa's brotherGeorge adopted the child and raised his as his own. That the rest ofthe Champlin clan suddenly left New England at this time suggests thatthey were involved in this scandal. The fact that they all went toSullivan County and Asa continued on to Herkimer suggests that it washe who actually fathered William Bentley (Champlin).
