[42] Comfort was born in Tolland County, CT in 1779. His parents wouldhave been residing in Windsor Connecticut during the time he was bornalong with his brothers James and Samuel and possibly a sisterAbigail. He moved to NY state sometime after 1800 and lived there inseveral places until he left for good in 1850 and relocated toMichigan. In later years his father, or parents, lived with him andhis brothers during their golden years.

In Census Reports, Comfort was listed as living in Lebanon NY in 1810,1820, 1830. The 1840 Census show he had moved to Clarendon. In 1850 heappeared in both Ohio & Michigan Census. Brothers were Samuel B. andJames both born in CT. James died in 1859 in Smyrna age 74 native ofCT. Comforts spouses names have been recorded as Sara Burdette andhis second wife name Abigail.. Comforts first child was named DavidComfort after his father. Comfort's second child was named Jamesafter his brother and the third child, Samuel after his other brother.Uriah, Comforts last son, was named Uriah Comfort. Uriah and did notlike the name Comfort and so Uriah named his second child James afterhis uncle Comforts brother. Then he named his next son Samuel afterComfort's other brother.
-------------------------------
In 1979, the Town Clerk of Windsor CT, upon request, supplied David'sbirth record along with a photo copy of it with Book and Pagerecords. He noted other records of that time period had beendestroyed by fire.
-----------------
Comforts first child, a female, who died as an infant was nameChamplin Burdette, after this first wife and mother. His son Uriahgave that name as a middle name for the first child.
-------------------------------
It is significant that of the 11 children that Comfort fathered...hisfirst born, and a male was named David Comfort after Comforts father.Comfort Coy was born in Tolland County and this was the familyhomestead of David(2), born in Windsor, Tolland Cty, CT. Comfortsfather is David(2). His grandfather David (1) who was born in Norwich,CT. Then the family moved to Tolland County the County from New LondonCty,. Norwich, CT.
---------------------------
In a letter of 21 Dec 1974, Harriet Ritter 1974 summarizes theComfort Coy situation as follows. "He lived in Lebanon, NY 1810-1835.It is proven that Comfort, and Sarah Burdette Coy were the parents ofhis first 7 children. "This was proved up until 1834 at which time hemay have passed away of moved, possibly to Michigan possibly viaOhio." (This excerpt was from 1974 when it was written.) Theirplace of residence was Lebanon, NY just on the county line betweenMadison & Chenango Counties, (early Oneida County). Lebanon recordswere burned in 1911 and the records of all churches (all small & Rural- were shoveled out and dumped or burned." Also found in the searchwas that Kenneth Coye married Ruby Coy who is also connected to theChamplins via "removed cousinship" as well as being aMunroe/Monroe-Coye thru Herbert, nephew of Uriah's while Ken andClayton are descended from David C., Comfort's first son and Uriah'seldest brother."
------------------------------
David, Comfort's first son was born 1803, died Aug 26, 1859 atSmyrna, 6 daughters,: a son born soon after David and two youngersons, Sam 1824 and Uriah 1826, both born at Lebanon, Madison Country,NY. Census records in 1810 show Comfort Coy as do 1820 & 1830 at thesame location.
-----------------------------------
As an aside, two of Comforts children died in 1859. They were alladults with families. We know that David C. did from Cholera, alsoJames his brother. Samuel died from Consumption that same year.
-------------
Comfort had moved away sometime after 1840. Since Uriah was farmedout at age 14/15. or 1840-41. At this point Comfort was 61 yearsold. It was concluded by John B. Hunt, biographical researcher, thatComfort married a second time sometime before 1820. His secondmarriage had provided him with a young family. At his age his familyshould have been gone by now. Uriah was, no doubt, excess baggage foranyone who wanted to start a new life, as he was the youngest of 11children. The first 8 by Sarah and the last four by Abigail. Of thoseremaining children Mary was a year older, so he got her married offjust short of her 17th birthday so by February 1842 was free of hisfamily.
------------------------------
In all probability Sarah had passed away between 1813-1818. Perhapshe moved to Clarendon to start a new life. Also at that timeComfort's brother Samuel resided in Clarendon as well so it is assumedthat Comfort moved close to his brother in 1840. Records indicatethat in 1845 his daughter Mary had moved to Michigan with here newhusband Chester Preston. By then she was 20 and a grown woman.Comfort then moved after 1845 and headed toward Michigan via Ohio. Here is what the Census reports show:
---------------------------
The 1810 Census of Chenango County showed Comfort and a female 26-45years old with one male, David under 10m, Sally and two otherdaughters. Mistake: It should be 2 males, James not shown.
-----------------
The 1820 Census,( page 69) same place, Comfort and spouse, still 26-45years old.
1 m-10-16 1 m 16-18 4 f-10 3 f 10-16. This was David, James,Sally, 2 Unknown, Amanda Hanna & Charity. At this point Comfort hadsix females and 2 male children. Not 9 as the Census indicates.
--------------
The 1830 Census, (page 351) shows 2 people, Age 40-50, James and Davidhad grown and had started their own families. Census shows, 1 Maleunder 5, Uriah; I Male 5-10, Samuel and 4 females 10-20, they wouldbe Amanda, Hanna, Charity, and Mary. In reconstructing thefamily, a J.B. Hunt was doing work on the Coy family and concludedthat "Comfort had probably took another spouse between 1815-1818".This is the second family we were looking for. Undoubtedly this iswhere Abigail came into the picture and remained with him until hisdeath after they had moved to Michigan. If Abigail would have beenthe mother of the first group of children she would have given birthat 14 years of age and had 7 children by the time she was 21 yearsold. In other words, Abigail definitely was Comfort's second wife.
-----------------------------------
The 1840 Census Comfort would have been about 61 years old andenumerated under that Census. His spouse Abigail was in the bracketbelow him from 50-60. The fact only 4 of Comforts offspring werelisted. The conclusion is that others may have been farmed out asapprentices. This information coincides with a family letter recallsa conversation with Uriah telling that as a youngster he lived withanother family.
--------------------------------------
The Census of 1840 found Comfort living in Clarendon, Orleans Ctyalong with Samuel and his family in the same town. This is anothertie-in. David, the father, could have been living with any of thethree brothers and switching off. The Census shows that. The familyrecord indicates that David lived with Comfort during the middle1830's. James has not been researched in the Census. We know thatUriah was bound-out when he was 15, or about this time. Mary wasmarried in 1842.
------------------------------
In the 1850 Census Comfort and Abigail were listed in Florence Twp,Erie County, Ohio. They were living with a family in the samebuilding by the name of Livonia Blackman from Ohio. Also with thenBetsy Foster of Vermont, Age 38 and the mother of Harris Foster 10years old. The Knapps were also in the same compound. When theCensus was done again on September 18th, this time Comfort and Abigailwere living in Livingston County Michigan. They were living withChester Preston and their daughter Mary. All of this indicates thatComfort and Abigail were on their way to Michigan in the summer of1850 and had reached their destination by September. Comfort died 16months later.
--------------------------------------
More Abigail, his second and only other wife, because his childrenwere so close together and frequent. There was a gap of 8 yearsbetween 1812 and 1820 when Charity was born. Abigail and Comfort had3 more children after than, Samuel, Mary and Uriah. When Comfort diedin Michigan, Abigail probably continued to live with Mary. Comfortwas buried in near their home in Michigan. The year 1852 in thePreston Plot along with Mary and other Prestons. Abigail'swhereabouts are unknown as are her birth, death, or marriage records.

[44] In 1973 Chalotte Ritter, Registered Genealogist wrote: "We don't knowmuch about Comfort except his residence. The Lebanon NY records wereburned in 1911, Records of all small churches, were shoveled out, dumped or burned." Since that time birth certificates or otherdocumentation were written for an requested but nothing has beenavailable. Paula Naujalis still has not given up and is constantlytrying to improve our our knowledge of Comfort and his family.
