INDEX

[512] Edward was the first settler of this surname to appear on BlockIsland. His spouse Mary George. The Island had been purchased in 1660for 400pds by sixteen persons many who became permanent settles in1661. Among those first settlers was Peter George, the father ofMary..and future father-in- law.

There as a white population of 50 persons when he came to this Island,and the Indian population was several times greater. Edward Ball wasmade a freeman in 1678, and in 1689 when the French privaterrs madedescent upon the island, it is probable that he suffered from theirplundering, as did his neighbors. He became a trustee for the Harborin 1696

In his will made in favor of his wife and children his inventoryshowed, a bull 4 cows, 4 heifers, 3 steers, 2 calves, 20 sheep, 16lambs, mare, colt 8 hogs and chickens.

[412] Christopher had six children, The first was Captain Christopher,then John, William, Jeffrey, Joseph, & Mary Ann. Was a member of theTown Council at Westerly in 1693

Christopher was not so prominent in public affairs as his brothers buthe held several positions of trust. In 1682 he was chosen, "For theJury of tryalls for the corte of tryalls to be held in Newporte." In1698 he was appointed constable, in 1703 he was a member of the TownCouncil, and in 1706 and 1707 he was a deputy to the General Assembly.

In 1700, Sept 11, he bought of "Ninicraft, Chief Sachem of yrNarragansetts for twelve pounds of N.E. silver," a tract of 140 acresin Westerly, bounded west by a river yt comes from Taukkacassett Pondand part by land of John Meson, south by yhe Great Pond, east as yefence no standeth east by ye hills of rocks behind north of ye housewhere ye now dwelleth." In 1711 he deeded Christopher Jr. 300 poundsand then 10 yrs later 200 pounds and his farm, house, and land inWesterly.

Christopher Champlin, youngest son of Jeffrey Champlin and EulalieGarde, was born at Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1656. Hedied at Westerly, Rhode Island on April 2, 1732. Christopher marriedtwice. The name of his first wife (whose name has been lost toposterity), was mother to all of his children, each of whom was bornat Westerly:

He married (2nd) c1721, Elizabeth Davell (Davol) - widow of CaptainWilliam Davol who died in 1719. William was the son of Joseph Davol(d.Feb 1716) and Mary Brayton. William and Elizabeth (-?-) Davol hadchildren: - William Davol (b.Aug 02, 1698)ousing and the rest ofmovables, and an Indian boy named Jeffrey. Elizabeth also received anIndian girl named Mercy, "...keep of the cow and horse by her sonWilliam, who shall also pay his mother 20 pounds every year, and 20loads of firewood supplied to her yearly by him".

Christopher Champlin was admitted a freeman of Westerly on October 17,1679; was elected to the Westerly Town Council in 1693, appointedConstable in 1698, and was elected to the Rhode Island GeneralAssembly in 1706 and in 1707 as a Deputy representing Westerly.

On February 11, 1711, he deeded to his son, Christopher, a 150 acrefarm which was originally purchased from the Sachem Ninecroft. Theinventory of his Will included 189.04.10 (pounds. shillings. pence)cash money, a mare, a horse, desperate debt of 106 pounds and an "oldnegro woman worth nothing". Son Christopher was named Administrator ofthe estate.
