Benjamin purchased 80 acres of land in Smyrna, in 1829. That housewas occupied by Ruby and Kenneth Coy in the year 1976 (notes fromCyndy Coy who visited).
In Geo Munson book early years in Smyrna 1905, Benjamin was born inRI and moved to Lebanon with his parents at four years of age. Whenhe was 21 he came to Smyrna and boughta tract of land on which hecleared a place and built his home. It was standing in the lotsouthwest of th present Card saw mill. He added to these lands fromtime to time until he had about 400 acres. He built a large saw millon his premises and an extremely large business. He was not afraid ofwork and had the confidence of all who knew him.
In a letter my Grandfather wrote to Mrs. Ritter....in 1947 he said,"sixty years ago I visited Chanango County and several towns aroundit, also Ithica. I visited, Coys, Cards, Champlins and otherrelatives. There were six Champlins living the youngest 67 and therewere Cards.
One was Ben Card, Mother's (Abigails)uncle. He was hale and hearty at80 years old. He was guite well off in real estate, miills etc. Hewas born there in Chenango County and never in his life been outsideof that County except once as a young man he went to Albany. All hislife after that he would refer to those days "when I was down inAlbany" In those days folks had a peculiar quality of staying "put."
