William Champlin, son of Christopher Champlin and his first wife, wasborn at Westerly, Rhode Island in 1687 and was still alive as late as1778 (despite the claims of some that he died on December 15, 1753).
William married Joanna (Watson?) before 1722 and they had sixchildren:
He was made a Freeman in 1723 and was called a cordwainer in 1726.
William purchased 12.75 acres from Job Babcock in South Kingstown onAugust 22, 1754. The property was bounded on the north by land ownedby Eleazer Colegrove, on the east by the land of Isaac Sheldon, on thesouth by Peter Boss' land and on the west by property owned by FrancisTanner. This deed was witnessed by John Babcock and Simeon Perry. OnJune 15, 1757 William sold a dwelling house and 5.5 acres of land inSouth Kingstown to the same Captain Job Babcock. Joanna released herrights in dower to this property.
On December 22, 1757 William sold the land that he had originallypurchased from Job Babcock to John Shelton, a South Kingstownshopkeeper. Again, Joanna released her rights in dower to thisproperty.
According to Rhode Island Freeman Admitted 1760-1762, William and hiseldest son were made "free" at the April 1760 Town Meeting held atCharlestown, Rhode Island. At that time, William was said to be acordwainer who possessed 244 acres of land and a dwelling house. OnDecember 10th of that year, William deeded to Elijah Champlin 120acres of land in Charlestown. The deed, which specifically referred toElijah as "my son" was co-signed by wife Joanna, thus releasing herdower rights to the land. The property was located along the banks ofthe Pawcatuck River just south of a bridge by Samuel Brown's Mill.Witnesses to the deed were Christopher Champlin and Joseph Crandall.
On November 2, 1762 another 120 acres of William's land in Charlestownwas sold to Rowland Robinson of South Kingstown. This tract of landwas surrounded by the following properties: to the west by WilliamHall's land, to the north by the new highway and Elijah Champlin'sland, to the east by Gideon Hoxsie's land, to the south by both ThomasHall's and Thomas Ninigret's land and to the southeast by DanielEdward's land. The deed was witnessed by Thankful and John Champlinand was not co-signed by Joanna Champlin. Thus, her dower rights wouldnot have been released. From this it would seem likely that Joanna haddied sometime between the sale of the two properties.
