Welcome to the Smoot Family Association

This family association has been created to sort out the genealogical relationships of those folks who have Smoot ancestors, including all the variations associated with that name, i.e., Smoote, Smute, Smout, Smootz, Smoots, Smut, Smuts, etc. While our focus will be on the pioneer immigrants that came to the American Colonies and those that came to the early United States, you should not feel limited by this. If you have any documentation of any Smoot, anywhere, you may submit that documentation to us.
Our Smoot surname also appears in the African American community, especially after our Civil War. All of you who have African American Smoot ancestors are also very welcome here.
How do you become a member of this Smoot Family Association? Simply subscribe to the SMOOT mailing list provided by Rootsweb. We do not intend to print a hardcopy newsletter. The SMOOT mailing list will be our method of communication. There is no cost to be a member of our association.
The first evidence we see of an American Smoot is of one William Smute, a boatwright, who immigrated from England to Hampton Virginia about the year 1634. The spelling of the surname Smute soon changed to Smoot and Smoote among William’s children and his descendants.
We also see the name Abraham Smootz appearing in the 1810 Shenandoah County Virginia U. S. Federal Census. We believe this Smootz to be a separate name from Smute/Smoot and that Abraham was not a descendent of William the boatwright. It seems that the name Smootz has as its most common spelling variation, Smoots.
