    This Indenture made this seventeenth day of May in the year of our Lord 1842 between James Johnson & Geo W. Smoot both of the County of Wilkes & State of North Carolina. Witnesseth that he the said James Johnson for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to him in hand paid by the said Geo W Smoot the receipt whereof is hereby fully acknowledged and himself fully satisfied and paid hath granted, bargained & sold & by these presents doth grant unto the said Geo. W. Smoot a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred & forty acres lying and being in the County of Wilkes on the waters of Roaring River south side bounded as follows: Beginning on a chestnut tree running South [?]31 chains & 62 links to a stake, thence East to the river, thence up said river east and west line, thence West to the beginning. Together with all woods, waters, mines, minerals, hereditaments, appurtenances & every other right, title & privilege thereunto belonging as in anywise appertaining to have and to hold the said land to the said Geo. W. Smoot, his heirs and assigns forever free and clear of all claims of any or [?] persons whatever. In testimony whereof he the said James Johnson hath hereunto set his hand and seal this day and date above written.
