Communities [populations in brackets]:

Kake [710] Kupreanof [23]
Petersburg [3,224] Port Alexander [81]
Thoms Place [22] Wrangell [2,308]

The Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area is located south of Juneau. It includes the communities of Wrangell, Petersburg, Kake, and Port Alexander.

The area has traditionally been dependent upon fisheries and forest products. Following the closure of the sawmill in Wrangell and pulp mill in Ketchikan, the timber industry has fallen upon hard times and wood products employment has plummeted in Wrangell and Petersburg. Kake Tribal Logging and Timber remains an important employer in that community, but the overall decline in timber harvests has severely impacted the region. Similarly, low fish prices have impacted the salmon industry and many fishermen have left the industry.

Total population for this census area in the 2000 census is recorded as 6,684.
