This info comes from the Barbour County mail list.
Thanks to Homer Jones for all his help.
James Matthews appears on the muster roll of Capt Edward Barnes'
Co, County Res, (Beat 12) as Pvt., age 58 ca 1864; don't know if this is
your James or not as I know of at least two early James Matthews in Dale.
The Matthews who initially changed his name to Preston (his mothers maiden
name) was William E. Matthews; think he moved to Columbus, Ga; served in
the war from Clopton as Pvt, Co B, 33d Ala Inf Rgt; he was age 18 when enlisted
Mar 11, 1862.
The J. Mc L. McRae (1838-1901) who m. Amma (1841-1916) served in the CW
first as Pvt, Co B, 1st Ala Inf Rgt and later as Pvt, Eufaula Lgt Arty; if
either ever filed for a Confederate Pension,
could be some decent information at the State Archives; buried Fairview
Cemetery, Eufaula.
Archibald P. McLeod of Barbour served as Pvt, Co B, 57th Ala Inf Rgt; one
William McLeod, unfortunatey no age shown, served with the "Eufaula Minute
Men"; there was a whole gob
of the McLeod's from Barbour and Henry who served w/ the 15th Ala.
