Peter F. Crombie

This flame is in honor of this tragic story to somehow keep their memory alive.
Last fall while crawling (literally) thru the briars and brush at Ephesus Cemetery
in Barbour, I found the grave of Sarah E. Abercrombie, 1821-1896 and noted on her marker was: wife of
W.A. Abercrombie, died at Ship Island, Miss. Knowing that Ship Island was a Union
POW camp, this kinda set me on fire
to get the full story.
Here is what I found from a descendant and some written material at Marianna, Florida
In Sep 1864, a union force under the command of Union General Alexander Asboth attacked the town of Marianna.
Among the defenders was William A. Abercrombie and his son Peter F.. both members of local Home Guard
units. They were both captured and along with others, were taken to Ship Island
(Ft. Massachusetts), Miss. Most of those captured who had served with regular Confederate units were sent
on to Elmira.
I guess we all know what happened to most of those.
William died of unspecified disease on Nov 4, 1864 and is buried in grave # 11.
He was 44 years of age.
Peter died of dysentery Jan 18,1865 and is buried
in grave #130. I don't know how old he was but surely he was not old enough to enter into regular service.
This is one of the saddest stories I have found in my many years of searching for Confederate burial sites.
