14. letter re John Johnston grave
253 Nassau Street
Brundidge, Alabama
10 October 1973
Dear Mrs. Godrey:
A former student of mine came by room the other day, and he carried me out
to a single grave that afternoon after school. He told me that his uncle
had showed him the grave. This single grave was located about 12 miles SE
of Clayton, on the Clayton-Bakerhill road, but my friend did not know who
owned the land. The grave was about 100 yds. off the paved road, on a road
that looked as if it had not been used for some time, possibly an abandoned
log truck road. The inscription was:
John Johnston, died Sept 23, 1853, aged 68 years, 7 months and 9 days
I must admit that it made me feel rather strange to see my name on a
tombstone!! I have no record of this man in my Johnston information. I
suspect that this man was the man mentioned on the paper that I sent you
several years ago. I believe that John Johnston was born in Horry Co, SC
and was the ancestor of the Bakerhill Johnston family. I could see no
evidence of any other graves at this site.
Sincerely,
John"
