Center Ridge Cemetery at Mount Andrew

Barbour County Center Ridge Cemetery is located on a loop off County Road 25 on the east side of the road just north of the other Center Ridge Church & Cemetery (Black). Center Ridge Cemetery has many unmarked graves: Township 11N, Range 25E, Section 5.

Tombstones at Center Ridge Cemetery reads:
Susanah P. Bullard, 18 Nov 1855 - 22 Sept 1858, Father: Henry, Mother: Emily G.
Samuel J. Bullard, 30 Jan 1859 - 25 Dec 1859, Father: Henry J., Mother:
Emily G.
William Henry Bullard, 30 Nov 1857 - 16 Sept 1858, Father: James F., Mother:
Mattie S.
Anna Alinah Bullard, 08 Apr 1862 - 24 Sep 1866, Father: James F., Mother:
Mattie S.
Robert Elias Bullard, 26 Jan 1867 - 01 Oct 1868, Father: James F., Mother:
Mattie S.
Emily Lavicie Bullard, 14 Oct 1869 - 18 Oct 1869,Father: James F., Mother:
Mattie S.

I believe Newton L. Cain Bullard born between 1832-1833 and died 1865-1866, my 3rd Great Grandfather, may also be buried at the Center Ridge Cemetery in perhaps an unmarked grave. Newton married Martha Jane Tucker on 26 Dec 1850 in Stewart Co., GA. She was the daughter of Robert Tucker & Percilla Scroggins Tucker. Newton is found living with his brother Henry in the 1850 Barbour Co., AL Census. Newton & Martha are found in the 1860 Mount Andrew, Barbour Co., Census.

Newton served in Company B of the 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment and Co. G of the 27th Alabama Infantry. As you probably know, Co. B of the 57th Ala Inf Rgt, "made up mostly of men from Barbour County, was called into service in Jan 1863, under the command of Capt W. Mabry; late in the war, due to consolidation of various regiments, those in Co B of the 57th served in Co G of the 27th Ala Inf; paroled as such at Greensboro, NC May 1, 1865". Newton died shortly after the war ended due to wounds received.

Newton's older brother was Henry Bullard born about 1819 who married Emily Eldred Baker on 15 Mar 1838 in Stewart Co., GA. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Baker and Elizabeth Curry. Henry and Elizabeth are also found in the 1850 and 1860 Barbour Co. census records. Henry was exempt from military service during the Civil War since he was a Constable in Barbour County at that time by the authority of "Governor's correspondence 1863-1864." James Francis Bullard, son of Henry Bullard, married Martha Sarah Draper on 18 Dec
1856 in Barbour Co., AL. She was the daughter of Peter Draper and Manda Lavicie Reed.

Martha Bullard, a sister to Henry and Newton, was born Feb 1823 and married Henry Jefferson Channell on 04 Jan 1845 in Stewart Co., GA. They are also listed at Mount Andrew in the 1860 Census.

I believe Nancy Ann Bullard, maiden name unknown, to be the mother of Newton, Henry and Martha. She is found on August 23, 1860, enumerated as "Ann", age 60 born in NC, and living with her daughter's family, Martha Bullard Channell in Barbour Co., AL and enumerated next to Henry Bullard. In 1870, age 70, living alone in Township 11, Range 25, Barbour Co., AL.

It is interesting to note the 1850 censustaker for Division 23, Jack Hardeman, enumerated these families twice with subtle differences. Any insight here would be appreciated.

The Bullards, Drapers, Reed, Channell & Pickett families migrated together from Barbour Co., AL to Cass Co., TX about 1870. Have not been able to locate any of these families in the 1870 Census records for AL, GA, LA, MS, AR or TX. So, it is probably safe to assume they were migrating during the year of 1870 or like many southerners refused to be enumerated in the 1870 Federal Census. The families are found in the 1880 Cass Co., TX census records.

I would be grateful if Center Ridge Cemetery receives a listing.

Many Thanks,
Tim J McCoy
