                                               Daniel Currie
Died at Griffin Georgia June 16th 1864 of Brain fever a desease in the Camp at the different stations at which he was located – John N. McRae a member of the Church and ruling Elder at Pea River.
John McRae was born in North Carolina – Richmond County – May 10th 1827 and died June 16th 1864 Aged 37 years one month and six days – John McRae joined the Church in yearly life in Richmond Co. N.C. he came to the State of Ala. In 49 or 1850 and did not remain long in the State before he joined the Church of Pea River and was always ready to do what was his duty to do – possessing a noble and generous disposition – made for himself miny friends – but when the Yankees Marshalled there cohorts to lay waist our native South he went with the sperrit of bravery and patriatism which should have moved every Southern son to action – leaped to arms and for miny months he stood underneath the folds of the banner of our Young Confereracy.
Determined to conquer or die but alass he has fallen and yealed up his gallant spirrit in pure defense of his country – Of a high order of intellect – a pure and devoted patriatism – a kind and never dying parent? affection – high aspirations and social quallitys of the most refined and noble character had been any guarntee for a long happy life John N. McRae would still be in our midist – the charm of every circle in whitch he moved. John N. McRae was a kind husband – An indulgent parent and it was the hope of his friends and familey that when peace would be restored – that he would meet the happy reception around his own fire side. But oh how changed the time? - He is cold in death and Burried like many others far from Home and friends but we are sure that God is near to the righteous when they die. John N. McRae was a good soldier and was always at his post.
A good young man has fallen and we Believe that he is in the enjoyment of the rest that remains for the People of God far from the noise of war and the crash of Arms. We know that whatever God does is right and we should bow in our humble submition to his holy will and while we greave that one so lovely in character has been removed from his familey and session of Pea River – We rejoice and praise God for the good we have that all is well with him.
John N McRae was the son of Catharine and Donal McRae citizens of N.C. John N. McRae was home but once to see his familey but remained in the service of his county – Allways ready to do his duty as a soldier – John N. McRae was a Sabbath School teacher and the instructions he gave we hope that will by lasting.
In the death of this young man the session of Pea River has lost a good member.
John N. McRae and R. B. McDonald were ruling Elders at Pea River and we who survive feel the loss of so worthy Members as they were. But the mighty are fallen – they [were] lovely and pleasant in their lives and in there death were not burried far apart. McRae died 16th of June and was Buried at Griffin – McDonald died the 5th of July and Buried at Atlanta – McRae leaves a wife and four children to mourn there loss but hope to meet again
How blest the righteous when he dies
When sinks a weary soul to rest
How beam the closing eyes
How gently heaves the expiring brest
Lifes duty done as sinks the clay
Light from its load the Spirit flies
While heaven and earth combine to say
How blest the righteous when he dies
