Old City
Cemetery (aka Bethel Baptist Cemetery) Ozark, Alabama
Old City
Cemetery (aka Bethel Baptist Cemetery) Ozark, Alabama. An alternate name may be Bethel Baptist cemetery,
efforts are underway to determine the actual name. In speculating, this cemetery
may be affiliated with what is now the First Missionary Baptist Church. The
First Missionary Baptist Church was formerly known as the Bethel Baptist Church;
it was formed for Blacks from what is now the Ozark Baptist Church.
Location:
For those familiar with Ozark, the cemetery is located at the rear
of the area known as the "Racetrack." From the intersection of Highway 231
and George Andrews Avenue, travel east on Andrews Avenue, heading towards
downtown; at the first traffic signal from the intersection, turn right onto
McCloud Street; travel straight until the road deadends; at the deadend
turn left onto Cemetery Street. The Old City Cemetery is on the
right side of the road. This cemetery is not the same one as the
City Cemetery located on South Union Street across from the
Ozark Baptist Church. Census records for that cemetery are available at
the Dale County Library. An internet roster is pending.
Tombstone Transcripts for the
Old City Cemetery (aka Bethel Baptist Cemetery)
Ozark, Alabama. Tombstone inscriptions from City Cemetery
located behind Racetrack Road off College Street in downtown Ozark. One of the
oldest cemeteries in Ozark. Census compiled from photographs of tombstone
inscriptions courtesy of Mr. Wali Sharif. Recording of tombstone inscriptions is
incomplete. Tombstone inscriptions that could not be easily read are shown as a
"?". Many gravesites are obscured by foliage, and by dirt and debris left from
severe weather.
