W. T. Kirkland, deceased, 2 day of November 1903. Charity Kirkland, widow.
W. W. Kirkland - Cicero Kirkland, executors. Cicero Kirkland; Pulaski
Kirkland; W. J. Kirkland; Sarah T. Holland; Clotilda C. Willis all over 21
years and who reside in Henry County. Ossie O. Hicks; James Griggs; and W.
W. Kirkland all over 21 years and live in Dale County. Sallie Creel and
Melissa Davis over 21 years and live in state of Fla. Newton Kirkland;
Joseph Kirkland; and Cicero Kirkland all over 21 years and live in state of
Texas. All are the heirs at law and next of kin and the divises of the said
W. T. Kirkland.
NINE EQUAL SHARES
1. One share for my deceased son, Washington Kirkland, heirs.
2. One share for my son, James Jasper Kirkland or heirs.
3. One share for my daughter, Mrs. Clotilda Willis, heirs.
4. Cicero Kirkland or his heirs if he be dead.
5. One share for my son, Pulaski Kirkland or his heirs.
6. One share for my son, William J. Kirkland.
7. One share for my daughter, Mrs. Sarah Creel.
8. One share for my daughter, Mrs. Melissa Davis.
9. One share for my beloved wife, Charity Kirkland, des. of household goods
for her; one feather bed.
I hereby appoint my friend; W. J. Foster and my son, Pulaski Kirkland, as
executors of my last will and testament. June 6, 1892.
And I hereby change the foregoing item of the will by striking out the name
of Pulaski Kirkland and in his stead the name of my son, Cicero Kirkland and
striking out name of J. W. Foster and in his stead the name of my grandson,
William W. Kirkland of Ozark. 23 Day of February 1899.

In 1891-1892, Mr. Henry R. Dills and Miss Eloise Thomas were teachers in the
school. After Mr. Dill came Mr. H. C. Sanders. Then the dual principal-ship,
Mr. William L. Lee and J. R. Faircloth 1893-1894. Mr. Clinton Thompson and
R. C. Connor co-principals 1895-1896. Major Baldy 1896-1897. Again Mr.
Clinton Thompson 1897-1899. Mr. Charles M. Brewer was school principal. His
father, George E. Brewer, was minister of the Columbia Baptist Church. The
old frame school building was torn down in 1901 to make room for the new
brick building known as the "Columbia Institute." There were no graduates
the first year, but under William C. Griggs in May 1903 diplomas were issued
to Frances Thompson, Blanche Purcell, Ouida Stovall and Karl L. Oakley.
During that same year, 1903, Houston County was organized from Henry, Dale
and Geneva Counties. All court proceedings were transferred to Abbeville and
Dothan.
