January 25, 1867
Joseph Lawrence died near Lawrenceville, Ala., on the 21st October 1866 at about
66 years of age. He removed from Georgia to this State upwards of twenty years
ago and settled in Henry Co., where he has lived ever since.... It may be said
with emphasis, that he was the father of the community in which he lived, of the
village which bears his name, and the Church of which he was a member.... W. K.

Rev. William V. Burney, of the M. E. Church, died on 8th October 1866 in
Tuskegee, Ala., after a long and protracted illness. He was born in Green co.,
Ga., Sept. 14th 1805, and at the age of twenty-one he commenced the practice of
law.... He leaves a bereaved widow and six children.

Mrs. Mary Treadwell, relict of Mr. Samuel Treadwell, was born in Newark, N. J.,
January 29th, 1777, and died of pneumonia, at the residence of her son-in-law,
Rev. John P. Margart, in Barbour co., Ala., September 26th, 1866. [eulogy]

Wm. C. Smith, Jr., died at Athens, Ga., 8 July 1867. He was a native of Sumter
co., Ga., born 11 October 1845. His parents removed with him, their only child,
to Alabama in 1853 and settled in Barbour county.

Near Fort Browder, Barbour co,. Ala,. Oct. 21, 1867, Edward Dantzler, son of
Col. E. S. Ott, aged 4 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Rev. Thos. C. Norton was born in Barbour co., Ala., 11th Sept. 1845, and died in
Brundidge, Pike co., Ala., Sept. 24th, 1867. He was the youngest son of the
venerable John Norton, who died in Barbour co., in 1862. He was the brother of
Revs. W. K. and Ethelbert Norton, of the Montgomery Conference. Joseph B.

Mrs. Elizabeth Hameter, widow of the excellent Joel Hameter, the memory of whose
virtues is cherish in the churches of Ala., died March 10th, in Barbour co.,
Ala. She was the daughter of Andrew and Nancy Bates, born in Edgefield Dist.,
S., C., Jan. 15, 1808. Nov. 14, 1833, she was happily married to him who for
more than thirty years was her earthly stay and comfort, until God took him and
left her with two affectionate daughters. Her daughter Julia died in 1857 while
at College in Tuskegee.... A. J. Hamill

Mrs. Jane McRae, wife of John C. McRae, was born Feb. 26, 1806, in Anson Co.,
N., C., married Sept. 21, 1826, joined the M. E. Church in 1843, and died in
Barbour Co., Ala., June 17, 1868.
April 2, 1869
Fielding Ellis, my grandfather, was born in Va., Oct. 1774, and died in Barbour
co., Ala., 24th Feb. 1869... He removed from Va. to Baldwin co., Ga., in 1812,
thence to Walton co., where he resided until the death of his wife, and which he
passed his time with his children and grandchildren. He died a member of the
Baptist church.

The Rev. John F. Dickinson, son of Rev. John P. and Elvira E. Dickinson, was
born in Henry co., Ga., Aug. 8th 1828. In Nov 1852 he was married to Miss Martha
J., daughter of the Rev. John W. Norton, of Barbour co. He died on March 31st.

Margaret Catherine Norton, daughter of James R. and Margaret Norton, died near
Clayton, Barbour co., Ala., February 20, 1871, in her 39th year. James R. Norton

Col. A. A. Franklin Hill was born in Oglethorpe county, Ga., Dec. 4th 1836 and
died in Barbour county, Ala., Jan. 9th 1871 [sic]. He was graduated at Franklin
College in 1845 and received the degree of M. D. in 1848 at Jefferson Medical
School, Philadelphia. He served for six years as assistant surgeon in the United
States navy, and for a short time edited the Southern Banner, at Athens, Ga. In
June 1869 he was married to Miss Gazzle Williams, daughter of Maj. Gassoway
Williams, of Alabama. He leaves and wife and child.
April 2, 1873
Mrs. Ann Barbara McCants was born in Camden, S. C., November 14, 1794, and died
at Orange Hill, the residence of Rev. John P. Margaret, near Eufaula, Barbour
county, Ala., February 24, 1873. Mrs. McCants was the daughter of Mr. Daniel
Carpenter, formerly a merchant of New York, who removed to Camden about the year
1792. About the year 1814 she was married to Mr. John McCants, a promising young
merchant of Camden. He died about 1819 and left two lovely daughters. About the
year 1828 she removed to Mount Ariel, now Cokesbury, S. C. About 1834, she
removed to Houston county, Ga., near the town of Fort Valley, and took her aged
mother under her care. Her here younger daughter was married. In 1844, Mrs.
McCants was bereft of her eldest and only surviving daughter, and in 1849 her
mother, Mrs. Lydia Carpenter, in the 82d year of her age. John P. Margaret
