Widow of the Late Senator Pugh Dead
Passes Away At Home Near Washington, Burial at Eufaula, Ala.
Washington, D.C. Nov 22 - Mrs.. Sarah Serena Pugh, widow of the late Senator
James L. Pugh of Alabama, died suddenly early this morning at the home of her
son, near Chevy Chase Lake. While Mrs.. Pugh had not been in robust health
recently, her condition was not alarming, and her death came as a distinct shock
to her children and large circle of acquaintances in the district. Sarah Pugh
passed her 81st birthday last August.
Mrs.. Pugh was born in 1833 in North Carolina. Her maiden name was Hunter, and
as a young girl she moved to Alabama with members of her family, where she met
the late Senator Pugh, then a young practicing lawyer in the town of Eufaula.
Some years later she married Mr.. Pugh and lived amid the scenes(?) of his early
legal and political triumphs(?) until 1879 when her husband was elected to the
Senate of the United States to sever of the unexpired term of Senator Houston,
who had dedicated(?) Senator Pugh for the junior senatorship of the state a year
prior(?).
The body will be taken to her old home in Eufaula to be buried by the side of
her husband. Funeral services in this city probably will be held Friday.
Mrs.. Pugh leaves six children: Mrs.. A. V. Cochran of New York, Edward L.
Pugh, a government employee of this city, Judge James J. Pugh of this city;
Judge John C. Pugh of Birmingham, Ala; Mrs.. Sarah Pugh Elliott of Eufaula,
Ala., and Henry L. Pugh, of Baltimore, MD.
