Where To Write & What To Join?
Often times we need to know where to write and what organization or library can help you. I will attempt to add all the sites I can gather to this page. I always recommend that you join the local genealogy society. This is the backbone to research. They are usually at the location and members help members. The dues are well worth it. |
The Barbour County records are currently being microfilmed. A great big thanks goes out to Ann Adams for getting this project off the ground. She can use all the volunteers she can get to help get all the records organized for microfilming. |

Southeast Alabama Genealogical and Historical SocietyThe Southeast Alabama Genealogical and Historical Society is composed of historians and family historians interested in the Wiregrass area of Southeast Alabama. Barbour County is included in the region represented by the Society. The Society meets every third Tuesday of the month at 7 PM in the community room of the Houston-Love Library in Dothan, Ala. Drop in on one of the meetings where you will find a warm welcome and meet with folks who can give you tips on area research. The group has published several books of area records. They have been instrumental in helping add to the growing family history collection of the Houston-Love Library, the public library of Dothan and Houston County. This is now the largest family history library in the region. If you are researching families in the area, a visit to this library is a must for you. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, Wiregrass Roots. Queries may be placed in the journal by non-members for $2. For more information and to join the Society, you can contact the group at: Southeast Alabama Genealogical

How to Get Alabama Death Certificates from the LDS Family History Centers
Many times, the family history researcher does not need a certified copy of a death certificate. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Library has purchased the microfilmed index to Alabama death certificates, and copies of Alabama death certificates. These microfilms may be rented for use at any Family History Center (FHC). For the location of the nearest FHC, contact a LDS church near you. Also, the Alabama death index is available at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery, at the Birmingham Public Library in the Microforms Department, and at the Special Collections of Wallace State in Hanceville, Alabama.
