Horace King

Horace KING, b. 1807, came from Cheraw, SC, to the Muscogee Co, GA, area with his master John GODWIN to build the first bridge at Columbus across the Chattahoochee River. In 1848, GODWIN freed KING, who continued to work with him in the construction business. KING is credited with building two covered bridges at Eufaula, one when the town was still called "Irwinton." KING died in 1887, and some say he is buried in the GODWIN lot at the Girard Cemetery (now in Phenix City), Russell Co, AL; others say he is buried in LaGrange, Troup Co, GA. Any further information on Horace KING or the two bridges he built at Eufaula would be appreciated, and I would be glad to share what further details I have about him and his family.
