Rebekah died prior to 1829, either in South Carolina or Georgia. John Commander is reported to have gone from the Creek Indian Country in Alabama, probably near Roanoke, to Georgia, where his son, Henry DuBose Commander, was born near Columbus. He later returned to Alabama, where he died. John is said to have perhaps lived in Macon County, Alabama, prior to, or in, 1836 before going to Georgia. His great-grandson, Sollie Foy Commander, stated in writing: "My grandfather's name was Henry DuBose Commander . . . He was born near Columbus, Georgia, on May 20, 1836, immediately as my great-grandmother arrived in Georgia from a flight on horseback from the Creek Indian Country in Alabama, as a refugee to Georgia . . . Mary Commander. Born probably in Sumter District, South
Carolina. Married _______? Schrock. Note: This surname has been furnished
as both "Schrock" & "Shrock". Extensive research has
failed to reveal a record of this marriage and the Christian name of the husband
of Mary Schrock neé Commander.
One "Commander-Shrock" marriage is on record in Crawford
County, Georgia–that of Elizabeth Commander to David F.
Shrock on Jan. 8, 1835. This Elizabeth has not been
identified by the compiler.
The descendants hereinafter listed as
those of Mary
Schrock
neé
Commander
and are believed by the compiler to be
her true descendants. Mary Commander neé
McDonald, mother of Mary Schrock and others was daughter of John McDonald Sr
and his wife, Elizabeth, of Sumter District.
"John McDonald Schrock" listed below as a son of Mary Schrock
neé Commander was probably named for his maternal grandfather, John McDonald
Sr. This evidence as well as additional evidence convinces the compiler that persons listed below are
descendants of Mary. See Will of John McDonald page 198 and see
"Schrock" data on page 162a. 6th Children of Mary (Commander) Schrock and her husband: 1.

buried at Forest. It is also said that a member of the Schrock family
lived in Forest in 1963. See page 162 for names of cousins of Robert Sidney

Marriage notice follows: The
Sumter Herald SUMTER, S. C., FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1904 COMMANDER-SMITH–Mr. J. Palmer Commander and Miss
Leona Smith were married at 8.30 o'clock last Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. T. N. Smith, the bride's father on Broad Street. Rev. N. W. Edmunds, D. D.,
officiating.
The wedding was a quiet one, only the immediate family and a few friends
being present. Mr. and Mrs. Commander left on the 9.30 train for Columbia, where they will spend a few days with Mr. Commander's parents". "Papa" Joseph Palmer Commander was born September 3, 1879
near Cartersville, South Carolina and was the oldest child of William Henry
Commander, who is buried in Fair Hope Cemetery, and Hellen Brand Commander, who is
also buried there. I was told that Dr. Palmer of Cartersville brought Papa into
the world and that is the reason his middle name was "Palmer." He was the grandson of Robert C. Commander, who is buried in the old
Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Lynch-burg, South Carolina and the
grandson of Sara Adelaide Brown Commander,
later Huggins, who is buried in Fair Hope Cemetery. He was also the grandson of
William H. Brand, a Confederate veteran, and his wife Annie Charity ____
Commander, who are both buried in Fair Hope Cemetery.
Papa was only six years old when his mother died leaving an infant, Annie Hellen
Commander. Lavinia Brand, the only sister of his mother, gave up marrying her
sweetheart to tend to her invalid father for years. She later lived
alone in Timmonsville and then went to the Confederate Home in
Columbia where she died. Papa had one brother, William Robert Commander, who married
Martha Murphy and they lived in Texas, mainly Tyler
and Commerce, and they both died and are buried there. A sister, Mamie
Burtell Commander, went out to Texas after
Uncle Rob lived out there and met and married James McKinnon Simpson. They lived
in Lawton, Oklahoma
a good while. They both died out there and are buried in Rosemount Cemetery, Commerce, Texas. Neither
of them had any
children. Annie
Hellen Commander, the youngest, was reared by Grandma Huggins in the old home
place across from Fair Hope Cemetery. After they died, her health failed and she
was in McElveen Nursing Home and Briggs Nursing Home where she died and is buried in Fair Hope. For a number of
years Margaret Commander Alwran and our family paid for her care in the nursing
home. Papa's childhood
is very sketchy and he never talked very much about his young days. Grandpa
Commander married Eva Rembert February 25, 1886, his first wife having died in
1885. They had eight children by this marriage,
one died in infancy but with four stepchildren and
seven of her own, Grandma had little time to devote to Papa. I know that
he went to school in Sumter and that Miss
Kate Moses was one of his teachers and he went to school in what is now Williams
Brice Museum. He did not finish high school but went to work in a cotton
mill that was located here (Mama told me
this). He only finished the 8th or 9th grade. However, after he was married he
went to night school which was upstairs across from the Sumter Dry Goods
Store and when we were emptying the book case,
there was this set of red books that Papa studied and I remember
them all through my living at 12 South Magnolia Street. Grandpa Commander was
connected with the Sheriff's office here in Sumter and may have been a
policeman.
The family was living in Sumter in March, 1892, because Grandpa was elected a delegate to the Conservative Convention in Columbia, S. C. He was living in Columbia in 1904
because in the write up of Mama and Papa's wedding it said they left by train
for Columbia to spend a few days with his parents. According
to the census of June 29, 1880 of Darlington County,
page 52, it shows William Henry Commander, age 22; Hellen J. Commander, age 22; and Joseph P. Commander, 10/12
10 months old. Mama and Papa
knew each other in their childhood. Mama
writes, "We were only bare foot kids, playing doll house, making
toad frog houses in the sand and playing like all kids do." When Mama
graduated from Sumter High School in 1904, she also write, (ends here incomplete). From the pen of Nelle (Commander) (Burkett) Milling–No.
1 below–via and by kind permission of the
Daughters of the American Revolution,
Sumter Chapter, and written in by Malcolm J. Commander, Ilford, Essex
England. 19th January, 1998. Mrs.
Beatrice Brown Commander stated Joseph Palmer Commander was born in Florence,
but the Daughters of the American Revolution wrote he was born in Darlington
County. I do not know the area, but as the information was given
to the Daughters of the American Revolution by, Nelle
Commander Milling, his daughter in 1978. I have changed the place of
Joseph Palmer's birth to Darlington County.
It may be that Florence is in Darlington County, and this shall be
corrected. 8th Children of Joseph Palmer
