This is the story as far as I know about my Forehand ancestors in Barbour County, Al.

Stephen came from North Carolina to what is now Barbour County, Alabama. Nothing is known at this time about his parents. His first wife was named Martha (last name unknown) According to the 1850 Barbour Co. census records his early years of married life were in South Carolina. The census show that two children were born in South Carolina:

1850 Census shows Stephen as a farmer living inumeration number 244 property value $200.00 his age is given as 55 and Martha his wife is listed as 46 years of age.

1. Nance Forehand was the eldest child age 17 b.. SC

2. John Forehand age 15 b. SC

3. Jessie Forehand born May 12, 1839 in Barbour County, Al.

4. Jeptha born 1841 in Barbour County

5. Thomas Forehand b. 1845 Barbour Co., Al.

It is believed that the family came to Barbour around 1835 and that he lived in or around Eufaula. Stephen Forehand died sometime between 1858 and 1860. Martha died after 1850 but before 1858. The burial site is unknown.

Stephen remarried soon after the death of Martha.

The 1860 Barbour county census his widow Jane Brown ( m. date 1858 Barbour county) was living with a two year old son named Stephen and Jessie listed as a farmhand along with Jeptha and Thomas.

Jessie my ggreat-grandfather married Miss Nancy Ann Durden of Barbour County 09/27/1860 in Barbour.

Jessie appears on the Feb. 26, 1862 muster rolls of The Eufaula Light Artillery age 20 (22).

Jessie survived the war, he and Nancy migrated from Barbour county to Coffee county al. in searching land records in the b.l.m. we found where Jessie filed for land in Coffee county Alabama. Most of Jessie and Nancy's children were born in Coffee county. My gt-grand mother was Lavonia Forehand m. Steven Calvestus Dowling. Their daughter Gussie Ester Nancy Elizabeth Dowling was my G-mother. Gussie married Berry Lee Adams ( son of Huling Adams Sr. and Margaret Fleming) . my mother Mary Lee Adams (daughter of Berry Lee Adams and Gussie Forehand ) married my father Harvey J. Grantham July 31, 1932 in Covington, county Alabama.
