Story by T. Larry Smith, Historian Henry County, Alabama

Theophilus Floyd and Delilah Page were the parents of Page Floyd.  Theophilus died in 1842.  Page Floyd married Elizabeth Margaret Bowden.  The Floyd and Bowden families were close friends and married members of both families.  The old Floyds and Bowden's are buried in Pleasant Plains Cemetery, south of Clayton, Al. in Barbour County.  The lands of Theophilus Floyd were sold at auction.

Land

The land was sold at "public outcry" in March of 1843. Page Floyd, born 20 Sept. 1816, the second son of Theophilus and Delilah, was the highest bidder at $351.00 for 160 acres of his father's land.  Shortly thereafter, he began construction on a six room house, facing west, located at the intersection of present-day county highways 43 and 53.

In all probability, Page Floyd designed the house himself.  According to his granddaughters, Mrs. A. B. Robertson, Sr. and Mrs. T. R. Parrish, the house was built in 1843 from hand hewn timber cut from his own land and joined together by wooden pegs.  Among the dependencies were kitchen, three cribs (barns) and a smokehouse.   Like most homes of that period, the kitchen was not part of the main house because of possible fire from open hearth cooking.  It was located near the northeast corner of the house and was connected by a covered walkway.

The floor plan consists of a dog trot with three rooms located on either side/  At that time, many houses were constructed with dog trot to allow summer breezes to blow through the center to make them cooler.  Each of the center rooms has a fireplace.  The chimneys were made of handmade bricks.  The rooms on the right side was connected by doorways while those on the left was not.  Each room has two windows and door to the dog trot.  As one enters the house, the small rooms to the left and right of the dog trot were used as bedrooms.  The two middle rooms were sitting rooms.  The small room on the left at the end of the dog trot was the dining room.  The  one across from it was another bedroom.  To the right of the dog trot, stairs lead from the back porch to the attic.

This was the house moved from Barbour county to Stone Mountain Park in 1967.

The house situated on a knoll. A large magnolia tree stood in the front yard.  The trees still stands, and it seems strangely out of place for there is no visible evidence that there was ever a house on that spot.

Note:  T. Larry Smith has written that his GGG Grandfather Joseph Floyd was Page Floyd's youngest sibling.  Joseph's mother died at birth.  Page was appointed guardian and "Joe" grew up in the Page Floyd home.

Note:  Elizabeth M. Bowden Floyd, wife of Page Floyd and who lived in the Page Floyd  (now called Clayton) home was a daughter of William Bowden (1786) who was a GGGG Grandfather of the famous FSO football coach Bobby Bowden.  So Page Floyd's wife was Bobby Bowden's GGG Grandaunt

Also recently deceased Jimmy Clark of Barbour county and speaker of the Alabama House of Rep. was kin to Page Floyd, who was a GG Ganduncle of Jimmy Clark

At Stone Mountain Park

Unique Floyd Home to be Glorified
By Ruth McDonald

A two-story frame house stood on a knoll, located some six miles south of Clayton, for more than a century. Recently it was sold and was transported to a new home at Stone Mountain, Georgia.

The old house was built from hand hewn timbers cut from the virgin forests and was put together by wooden pegs by Page Floyd.  Floyd was one of the pioneer settlers in southeast Alabama (now Barbour County)

The house has six rooms with an open hall running through he center.  There rooms are on either side of the wide hall.  A door at the right of the back of the hall opens on a flight of stairs leading to the second story.  A front and back porch adds to the spacious features of the old house and like all homes in that period of time the kitchen was guilt some distance away. A covered walkway connected the kitchen with the main body of the house.  The square rooms measure approximately 18 feet and each one has two windows.  A door in the middle room opens onto the hall.  Hugh fireplace in the middle rooms were built for burning logs for warmth.  Chimneys made of handmade brick centers either end of the old structure.

The house was built on property which was purchased by Floyd shortly after Barbour county was created in 1832.  Granddaughters here have a  deed showing ownership and is signed by President James Monroe in 1810.   The actual date  of the building has not been determined but is believed to be at least 185 years old..  Many tales could be told, if it could speak, of the growth of the county, people who lived there the builder.   Floyd, like most of the early settlers in the new state of Alabama, joined the defense of their families homes from the Creek Indians prior to their departure to new homes.  He was too old for service in the War between the States but some of his sons fought bravely for the South.

T the death of Mrs. Greene the property went to her daughter, Miss Margie Greene, with whom she lived here.  Four other daughters also live here.  Only one of the family has passed away and the other members reside in other sections of the state.

Happy Memories

The house vacant for a number of years before the sale to be moved to a new home.  The Homer Dixons and the Marvin Greathouses were the last families to live there.  Both families recall happy memories living there and in leavint the house you always went down hill because of the knoll on which the house stood.

A member of the Stone Mountain Foundation Association saw the old house in traveling through the country. He stopped to make inquiries of the possibilities of securing the house to be restored in the park area.

The Old Barbour County home was sold by Miss Greene earlier this year and it was transported to Stone Mountain recently.  It will be restored in the near future and will continue to be the sentinel that it has been for many years.
