Generation No. 1

1. Susan K.3 Glover (John Paschal2, John1) was born Abt. 1835 in Ga1, and died Abt. 1858 in Henry Co., Alabama. She married Eli S. Glover December 19, 1849 in Randolph Co., Ga, son of Thomas Glover and Ellender Frederick. He was born Abt. 1826 in Georgia, and died February 16, 1865 in Elmira (Hellmira), N.Y. Prison of War Camp..

Notes for Susan K. Glover:

Susan died sometime between 1857 and April of 1858 in her father's will she was deceased and an inheritance was left to her children by her father.  Susan died young and left Eli with four small children.  Her death came at a time when this country was in turmoil and within a couple of years Eli went to fight in the Civil War.  He never returned.  Susan and Eli's children were orphans and lived with family members.  All would have been under the age of 10 and two were probably under the age of 5.

Notes for Eli S. Glover:

Eli married Susan K. Glover in Randolph, Ga. in 1849. They lived in Henry County, Al. near Lawrenceville and had 4 children. Susan died about 1857/8. Eli married Mrs. Annie Jane Corbitt Jan.11,  1859. I believe 3 children born of this marriage.  The Civil war broke out and Eli joined the 1st Alabama Artillery Battalion.

Eli was captured at Fort Morgan, Al. and sent to Elmira "Hellmira" NY and died there. Elmira was a hell hole with much abuse, neglect, deliberate starvation, murder and mistreatment of the Prisoners of War imprisoned there. Eli is buried in Woodlawn cemetery in Elmira, NY

Eli, Thomas and Alfred are listed as living near each other the 1850 census reports of Henry County, Alabama and James was living with J. P. Glover, Susan's father and Eli's father-in-law.

1st Alabama Artillery Battalion

The 1st Alabama Artillery Battalion, Companies "A"-"F", was recruited in Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, and Eufaula, part of the "Army of Alabama," and it was organized about the 1st of February 1861, at Fort Morgan. In the spring, the command was transferred to the Confederate government as "regulars". Stationed at Fort Morgan and its dependencies, the battalion attained a high degree of discipline, insomuch that Union Gen'l Granger pronounced it the most perfect body of either army. Detachments of it manned the heavy artillery at Forts Gaines and Powell and rendered effective service. During the terrific bombardment of Fort Morgan, August, 1864, the battalion, "moved by no weak fears," handled the guns until they were all knocked out of position, losing 150 k and w of about 500 engaged. The men were taken to Elmira, New York, where fully half died of smallpox (officers were taken to Fort Warren.) A small detachment, not captured, continued the fight at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. A small number moved to Choctaw Bluff in March 1865 and were included in the surrender of the Dept. of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.

Field and staff officers: Lt. Cols. Robert C. Forsyth (Mobile; resigned); James T. Gee (Dallas; captured, Fort Morgan); Majors S. S. Tucker (Vermont; died in service); James T. Gee (promoted); J. M. Cary (Barbour; captured, Fort Morgan).

Armaments: Co. "A", two 6-lb. Smoothbores (on 31 Oct 1861)

Eli S. Glover joined the 27th Alabama Volunteers August 21, 1863 in Henry County, Al. and then transferred to Co. F 1st Regiment Alabama Cavalry.  Eli was captured at Fort Morgan, Alabama on  August 23, 1864.  He was took to New Orleans, La. and was put aboard a ship bound for New York City on Sept. 27, 1864.  When he arrived in New York City he was put aboard a train for Elmira "Hellmira", NY.   He was received at Elmira "Hellmira" on Oct. 8, 1864.  Eli died in Elmira "Hellmira" on Feb. 16, 1865, and the report says he died from Chronic Bronchitis and that his belongings were buried with him.  He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery at Elmira "Hellmira" grave number 2215, records at the National Archives indicated that he was in grave number 2220 but the cemetery said the correct grave site is 2215.  The cemetery is now a National Cemetery.   It is written upon the paper in the log book that Eli S. Glover died of Chronic Bronchitis, the truth is the prisoners of Elmira "Hellmira"  were starved, poisoned, deprived of proper medical treatment and murdered.

Notes for Nathan O'Neal Glover:

Information for Nathan O'Neal Glover is from Oral History of Eli Chapman Glover, son of Nathan and grandson of Eli Glover

Nathan was born in Georgia according to census reports but traveled back and forth several times to Alabama where he lived, worked and raised a family until he left Alabama in 1891 to go to Fort Smith, Arkansas.

He married Emma Gray Feb. 4, 1879 in Taylor County, Ga., he and Emma can be found on the 1880 census report with their first born child George.

According to Eli Chapman several of the children were born in Georgia, George, Laura and one unknown by name.

About 1887 through 1888 Nathan worked for the Railroad and lived south of Atlanta, Georgia. According to Eli Chapman they lived close to Atlanta and Macon in a 6 room house they laid off a acre of land, two rooms there on the front he was going to make a work shop, they rented it out and never did finish it, Eli Chapman said he was going on 7 when they lived in Atlanta.

"Later on he became a freewill Baptist preacher, he didn't mind riding 35 or 40 miles to church, he went every Sunday it didn't make no difference if it wasn't close by he went to church" from Oral History of Eli Chapman Glover

Nathan left Georgia after the death of his little girl (name and date of birth unknown) in 1888.

Nathan moved his family back to Alabama to his father's old place where his brother Frank was at. Nathan had to get a written permit to leave the state of Georgia because of the fever that was in New Orleans and Georgia. Nathan built a place on the Hawkins old place and lived there until he left and moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas. They traveled by covered wagon to Fort Smith, Arkansas in the year of 1891.

Little is known of the Fort Smith days other than they did frequently travel back and forth between the Indian Territory in Oklahoma and Fort Smith where they lived. It could have been because of him being a preacher that he traveled the territory at this point this is only speculation on this writer's behalf.   It is known that Nathan was a Drayman and he hauled goods to the Indian territory in Oklahoma.  It is also known that the Indian agent was George Glover and thought to be related to Nathan.

Nathan was living 6th street in the first building beyond the federal court building there when he died. His son Eli was also sick and was unable to attend the funeral.

Notes for Emma Jane Gray:

Emma Gray is first found on marriage records in Taylor County Georgia Feb.4, 1879 when she married Nathan Glover. She is next found on the 1880 census report in Taylor County, Ga. with Nathan and their newborn son George Glover. Also living near by is Emma's half sister Cassie Young. After the death of Emma in Fort Smith Emma and Nathan's youngest children Laura, Leila and Ollie were placed in the custody of the courts in Fort Smith, Ar. The three daughters were placed with families and it was over forty years before they were reunited.

Emma died Sept. 17, 1897 from Typhoid fever in Fort Smith, Ar. Birnie Brothers funeral home was in charge. She was buried in the county cemetery in Sebastian County..
