William McKay
Barbour County, Alabama Marriage Records show that William McKay married
Alace (sic) Shira January 31, 1897. Alice Shirah was the daughter and eldest
child of Silas King Shirah and Rhoda Payne.
The first marriage to Molly Payne could have been in neighboring Dale County,
Alabama as there are many Payne's there. If the marriage was in Dale, records
prior to 1885 were destroyed in the court house fires.
Some proof, some speculation . . . hope you can use some of it.

1. WILLIAM THOMAS2 MCKAY (DUGALD1) was born Jan 1860 in Alabama. He married
(1) MARY "MOLLY" PAYNE Bef. 1887. He married (2) ALICE SHIRAH 31 Jan 1897 in
Barbour County, AL, daughter of SILAS SHIRAH and RHODA PAYNE. She was born Nov
1866 in Barbour County, AL.
Notes for WILLIAM THOMAS MCKAY:
Sinthia McCay (sic), age 46 (sic) born in Georgia, and children; Penny 18, Henry
12, Eliza 10, William 8, and John 6 were living in Clopton, Dale County, Alabama
on June 18, 1870 when the census was taken. William McCay
(sic) 22 and his wife Sarah 18 lived two doors away.
On June 26, 1880, a McKay family headed by Sinthy (sic) 65 (sic) and children;
Mary F. 25, Lizer (sic) 22, William 20, John 18, and Wilson 4 lived at Clopton,
Dale County, Alabama when the census was taken. All children were identified as
Cynthia's children. Judging from the 1870 census and the age of Wilson in 1880,
it is probable that the censustaker transposed Cynthia age as 65 instead of 56.
The family next door was William McKay and his wife Sarah, and children; Sidney
6, Emery (sic) W. 4, and Walter 1.
The Heritage of Dale County, Alabama, pp. 303-304, discusses the William and
Sara (Peters) McKay Family. From the description and names contained in
Heritage, the family living next door to Sinthy in 1870 and 1880 was the son of
Dugald McKay and Jennett Priest from Randolph County, Georgia. The article goes
on to say that Jennett died in Georgia and Dugald married "Cynthia Jones, sister
of Josiah Peters' wife, Catherine Jones." Therefore, it is reasonable to
conclude that Sinthy who was living at Clopton, Dale County, Alabama was Cynthia
Jones, the second wife of Dugald McKay and step-mother of William McKay who was
living next door to her in 1870 and 1880. If this conclusion is correct, William
Thomas McKay who married Mary "Molly" Payne and then Alice Shirah, was the son
of Dugald McKay and Cynthia Jones.
William McKay, wife Alice, and seven children; Ella, William A., Eliza F.
John C., Mary D., Vasta (sic) G., and Calvin W. lived in the Reeder's Mill
Community of Barbour County, Alabama on June 4, 1900 when the census was taken.
The census indicated that William and Alice had been married three years. This
information coincides with the Barbour County, Alabama Marriage record for this
couple on January 31, 1897. The census also indicated that Alice had given birth
to two children-both living. Therefore, Vasta (sic) and Calvin were her children
and the other five were Williams's by his first marriage to Molly Payne.
On April 15, 1910 William T. McKy (sic) age 49 married twice, married thirteen
years on the present marriage, his wife Alice 42 married once and had given
birth to eight children, all of whom were living, and children; Cleveland (John
C.) 17, Dodie (Mary D.) 15, Laster (sic) 12, Winster (sic) (Calvin W.) 11, Louis
10, Roy 8, Lumma 6, Henry 5, Eunice 3, Willie (male) ten months lived in Clopton,
Dale County, Alabama when the census was taken.
