1. WILLIAM3 DORMAN (BENJAMIN2, JOHN1) was born 11 May 1801 in South Carolina, and died 01 May 1877 in Barbour County, AL. He married NELLIE PENELOPE SMITH. She was born 27 Sep 1811 in Georgia, and died 06 Mar 1891 in Barbour County, AL.
Notes for WILLIAM DORMAN: Alabama entered the union as the twenty-second (22nd) state on December 14, 1819. Prior to that time, this area was part of the Mississippi Territory and Indian lands. Its earliest counties -- Washington, Madison, Baldwin, Clarke, Mobile, Monroe, and Montgomery -- were formed from the Mississippi Territory. From the formation of the Alabama territory in 1817 until around 1830, Native American tribes retained possession of signification portions of land in Alabama. By 1832, more land had been ceded to the state and new counties formed, particularly along the eastern border of the state. Barbour County was created on 18 Dec. 1832, from former Creek Indian territory and a portion of Pike County. Its boundaries were altered in 1866 and 1868. The county was named for Virginia Governor James Barbour. Barbour County is located in the southeastern section of the state, bounded on the east by the Chattahoochee River and the State of Georgia. The county seat was established in Louisville in 1833, and moved to Clayton in 1834. 3. JOHN WILLIAM4 DORMAN (WILLIAM3, BENJAMIN2, JOHN1) was born 14 Dec 1840 in Barbour County, AL, and died 28 Dec 1913 in Newton County, MS. He married MARGRET ELMARY GRAHAM.
Notes for JOHN WILLIAM DORMAN: Interview with Bernice (Dorman) Mills John William Dorman owned 640 acres of land. The township of Dormanton, MS was named for him, see E-mail printout. John had 13 children, (have info on 9). The Rock Creek Cemetery has many Dorman tombstones since John William donated the land for the Baptist church. Obidiah L. Dorman was the first person buried at the cemetery. The descendants were told he was the brother of John William. He, however, does not appear to be listed on the census records. The year 1907 is on the tomb as his death date. Judge John William Dorman fought in the Confederate War. It is believed he was injured, the copy of the Muster Roll is so faint it is difficult to read. John William was captured and held prisoner in Salbury, NC. He was released from prison 12 May 1865. Bernice has a copy of his Civil War discharge and the release he signed never to take up arms against the United States again. Judge John William Dorman was obviously a firm man. He had a son William that left on his horse one day and was never heard from again. The son accused John William of stealing his marriage license twice.
Judge John William Dorman is on the census for 1880: Others: Leslie Duncan, age 70, James Herrington, 82, Nancy Herrington, 60, Alis McMahan, 26, George Cooper, 82, Peter Williamson, 80, Rachel Bishop, 82, Thomas James, 20. Notes for MOLLIE AGNES DORMAN: Unable to locate in census records Notes for JAMES LAWRENCE: James and one brother survived the Civil War (no name for brother) When James died, Mollie and Arthur went with the surviving brother to Indian Territory which we assume is now OK. James Arthur left sometime around 1888 or 1889 and went to Texas because he supposedly killed a man for slapping a woman. Another story is that he hid on a riverboat and came down river to Texas and was befriended by a black man while he was hidden on the boat. We are told he never went back to see his mother. The family members firmly believe these storie but we have no proof. They are fun to tell but that is it. Margie Lawrence

Notes for AMANDA ELIZABETH DORMAN: Copy text: "Amanda Elizabeth Dorman, did not remain in Alabama moved to Florida. My father's mother, Amanda, died when I was 6. William and Penelope's daughter, Amanda Elizabeth married Robert Larkin Beasley in Barbour County. They had children and I am the granddaughter of their daughter, Nelo who married John W. Robinson. My parents were John Howard Robinson and Edna Gulledge, both of Barbour County. I began researching my Father's family just a short time ago. My parents, as well as almost all their siblings, are dead. My father had written down the names of his grandparents so that is where I started. Fortunately, it seems that most remained in and around Barbour at least for the 1850 on census. I found JZ and who I assumed to be his wife Mollie on the 1860 census. Since I posted that message, I have been in touch with a Bernice Mills and her relatives who live in Mississippi. Apparently at least one child migrated there. They were able to tell me that William's father was Benjamin and was from Horry County, SC. That is all I have at the present. Do you know anything about the family. I am 45 and was a late baby, therefore, almost all were dead by my birth. I know nothing of the family but what I have found in the census. I will most gladly share what I learn. I still have family living in Clio and hope sometime this summer to come to Montgomery in order to do continued research. I love the internet, especially when I gain new family. Katie Robinson

Mary Dorman, granddaughter remembers Granny Emma: Emma told her the story of her parents that could not read. Emma would read the mail to them when it was received. When John Zach wrote to Sarah and William to ask for Emma's hand in marriage, Granny hid in the loft of the house so one of her sisters would have to read the letter to her mother and father. Mary Dorman remembers that Granny Dorman loved "vittles." She made the best tea cakes and kept them in a pink cookie jar. She also made wonderful peach cobbler pie. Granny Dorman loved okra and cooked it regularly in a big pot on the stove. She also played an accordion and was quite good at it. The children would ask her to play it for them and she kept it in the back room of the house. Granny Dorman petted Mary since she was the first person to realize that Mary could not see. They were picking up pecans and said Mary was walking all around the pecans because she could not see them. Emma told Tom and Ruth to take her to the doctor. Granny Dorman had many fruit trees. She would cut up apples, peaches, and figs, put them on a large piece of tin and dry them in the sun. She made fried pies "tarts" in the winter. When granddaddy Dorman was alive they would buy large drums of oil sausage to feed the children when they did not have much money. She was a good Granny. Mary would sweep the front porch for her everyday. The Dorman home was at the pecan grove to the left behind Center Point Church. Kirby lived with Granny since he never married. When Tom built a home for his family, it was behind Granny's house exactly 1/4 mile (it was moved years later to its current location). The bus for Ramer school picked the kids up in front of Granny's house.
