To Hon. J. S. Williams Judge of Probate for said county, the application of the undersigned administrator of the estate of Abner Belcher deceased respectfully showeth that said deceased died possessed of the following named negroes. to wit -
One negro man named Larkin, one woman named Phillis, and her three children Jim, four years old, Martha two years old, and the third an infant about four weeks old. Larkin is about twenty eight, and Phillis about twenty two years old. Petitioner alledges that it will be more for the benefit of said estate to sell negroes, than not to sell them for the following reasons - The heirs of said deceased - five in number, are all minors, and under ten years of age. Petitioner cannot hire Phillis and have the hirer to pay the present enormous taxes and furnish clothing too. Larkin cannot be hired for anything over a trifle, if hirer has to pay taxes and provide clothing, as is usual in the hire of Negroes. It will be more than ten years before a distribution can take place in the regular course of law. Said Negroes can now be sold at high figures say nine or ten thousand dollars, which will be more profitable to the children than the hire of the negroes would be after taking out the!
taxations and incidental expenses. For these reasons, petitioner ask of your Honor an order authorizing him to sell said negroes for the benefit of the estate.
