Perry County was formed 13 December 1819 from lands acquired in the Creek Cession of 1814. Named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, federal naval hero of the War of 1812. Marion is the County seat (first named Muckle's Ridge); site of first courthouse 1822.

We are especially indebted to W. Stuart Harris for his books "Perry County Heritage".

- Did you know? that the CSA flag (1861-"Stars and Bars") was designed by Nicola Marshall and was first made in Perry County?
- And that Sam Houston married a Perry County girl? (Margaret Lea on 9 May 1840)
- Or that one of the earliest (1867) Negro schools Lincoln Normal School was originally in Perry? It is now AL State University.
