page 36: "In 1827, S. H. Nelms and Adam Boyd established the first tan yeard on the site with would later by the home of Dr. Bates.
Boyd was one of the principal founds of the Marion Methodist Church.
They [Helms and Boyd] successfully operated the tan yard for six years before selling it.... Boyd then moved to Blount County. [end quote]
