| ATKINSON,
Reuben A. (Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, Company A & B, 6th
Alabama Infantry Regiment) was born 1834 in Henry County Alabama the first son
of and Jane Gamble Scroggins (born 1802 in South Carolina) and John Atkinson
(born 1799 in North Carolina).
John and Jane were married June 2, 1827 in Henry County Alabama. Reuben
is buried at Judson Baptist Church Cemetery, northwest of Abbeville, Henry
County, Alabama. no dates. In Orphans Record Book 0, Pages
88 and 89, his estate was settled on March 7, 1864. It is believed that
he died in the Confederate Army. He had a wife and several minor children
when his estate was settled but they were not named.. His marriage was
not recorded in Henry County. Reuben enlisted on May 11 or 16, 1861 as
a Private in Montgomery Alabama and was commissioned by order of the Governor
of Alabama while serving in Virginia on October 30, 1861 as a Jr. 2nd Lieutenant.
His name appears on the Record Roster, Commissioned Officers, Davis Ford
Virginia on December 25, 1861. He shown present on January 13, 1862.
A military roster reports :
I have a copy of a news paper article from the RICHMOND DISPATCH
dated June 4, 1862. ( three days after the Battle of Seven Pines ) It is
a casualty list written by Captain J.N. Lightfoot, captain Co B 6th
Al Reg . Reuben's name, under KILLED, is the first name on the list. It
was suggested that Capt. Lightfoot believed Reuben to be dead but,
in fact he lived 3 days and died in the hosp.in Richmond.
His mother was the daughter of Margaret and George Gamble. This George Gamble was the father of Robert Gamble, the first white child born in Henry County Alabama. Reuben's brothers and sisters were: (1.) Eunice Atkinson was b. April 30,1828 in Henry County Alabama. She married John Boatwright July 28, 1846. She died September 30, 1907 in Henry County Alabama and is buried in Judson Cemetery, Henry County Alabama. Children of Eunice and John B. were: Edmond, Drewsy, Hirum Gilmore, Mary Jane and Arcanie. (2) (Reuben our conf. soldier) (3) Rhoda Atkinson, b. 1837 in Henry County Alabama. She married (1) Thomas P. Gardner, June 1, 1854. (2) Stephen Parker in Early County Georgia. (4) Nancy Atkinson, b.1842 in Henry County Alabama. Nancy married George Fleming January 10 1867. She died November 1915. Children of Nancy and George: Joseph, Annie, Sarah and Alto. (5) Angeline Atkinson b. 1844 died 1930 never married. Buried in Judson Cemetery Henry County Alabama. (6) John Anderson Atkinson (my grandfather) b. 1848 in Henry County Alabama. He married Lauran Louisa Woolf, January 15, 1880. She died May 27, 1925 in Bronson, Florida. She is buried in Centerhill, Florida, beside a daughter, Mary and a son, Reuben.
