Thomas M. Murphree The likeness is of my old comrade, T. M. Murphree, Company E Sixth Alabama Infantry, A. N. V. The picture taken in 1901, represents Private Murphree dressed in the uniform jacket issued to him when a boy soldier, at Sangster's Cross Roads, Virginia., August 1861. Comrade Murphree did gallant service with the Sixth Alabama, of Seven Pines, First Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Boonesboro, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg. February 18, 1863, by reason of his having been commissioned to Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, he was transferred to the Army of Tennessee in Company H, 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment. From that period to close of the war, he served with that army. Mr. Murphree is a most enthusiastic veteran, and has compiled a record of all the soldiers from Pike County. | I noted you have a photo of Thomas Murphree in his Alabama communtation jacket. You may well know this already, but in case you do not, the tattered remains of that jacket can be found at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History. Murphree proudly wore the jacket to reunions for years, proud of his service in the ranks, though he was later an officer in a western theater regiment (if memory serves). He claims that the jacket was used at Sharpsburg to cushion Colonel Gordon's head as the men tended to their wounded leader. Since he spread that story at reunions, and since he was obviously held in high regard by his comrades, there is little reason to doubt his story. David Neel Jr. dsneeljr@peoplepc.com | |
