*POWELL, Mark A. (Corporal, Company M, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Mark Allen Powell was born August 18, 1836 in Lowndes County Alabama; died February 17, 1920 and buried at Steep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lowndes County Alabama. He was a son of  Elizabeth Woodruff Smith (b. March 22, 1810 in Halifax County and d.  June 24. 1880 in Lowndes County) and Allen Powell (b. July 20, 1791 in Halifax County, North Carolina; d.  September 27, 1873 in Lowndes County, Alabama). Mark married September 6, 1866 in Lowndes County Alabama to Mary Luke Huffman born November 24, 1844 in Dutch Bend Autauga County Alabama; died December 3, 1914 and buried at Steep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lowndes County Alabama. Mary Luke Huffman was the daughter of Mary Houser and  Luke Hoffman  of Autauga County.  She married to (2) to Josiah Haigler. Mark and Mary had two children:  1st) Clifton Woodruff Powell, was born September 15, 1867, and died August 16, 1923. He was graduated from the Medical College of Alabama in 1891. In October of that year he married Corrie Flinn, daughter of Daniel and Lucy Davis Flinn of McGehee’s Switch (now Hope Hull) who was born 28 September 1871 and died 3 May 1960 in Lowndes County.  Both are buried in the Letohatchie cemetery. They had five children. 2nd) Howard S. Powell born December 6, 1869 in Lowndes County Alabama; died September 13, 1939 and is buried at Steep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lowndes County Alabama. Howard married June 7, 1905 in Lowndes County Alabama to Sallie Mae Dickerson with no children of their own, but adopted one son which did live to reach majority. 

Mark joined the Hayneville Guards, First Battalion, 58th Regiment, Alabama Militia, in 1859 along with his brother Octavius Augustus Powell and was enrolled for Confederate service on  April 17, 1861 at Braggs Store, Lowndes County Alabama in Captain Willingham's Company that went to Montgomery Alabama and on Monday, May 6, 1861 became Company E, 6th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  The Company became Company M, after the re-organization and enlistment in the Army of Northern Virginia in March 1862 at Yorktown Virginia. At about this same time the Powell brothers transferred into Company K, 5th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment. *POWELL, Octavius A. (Private, Company M, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Octavius Augustus Powell was born 1841 in Lowndes County Alabama; died May 31, 1862 at the Battle of Seven Pines Virginia. Burial location unknown. He was a son of and sixth of nine children born to Elizabeth W. Smith and Allen Powell (b. Virginia April 20, 1791- d. 1873 near Hayneville, Alabama) Octavius joined the Hayneville Guards, First Battalion, 58th Regiment, Alabama Militia, in 1859 along with his brother Mark Allen Powell and was enrolled for Confederate service on April 17, 1861 at Braggs Store, Lowndes County Alabama in Captain Willingham's Company that went to Montgomery Alabama and on Monday, May 6, 1861 became Company E, 6th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  The Company became Company M, after the re-organization and enlistment in the Army of Northern Virginia in March 1862 at Yorktown Virginia. He served at the First Battle of Manassas, Yorktown, Williamsburg and killed at the Battle of Seven Pines Virginia. Octavius stood his flag in the ground as he was dying and if he had lived the next day he would have been promoted to a Colonel.
