David, was a student at Marion Institute in Marion, Alabama (where he narrowly escaped death in 1853, by jumping from a window of the burning college building). At the time of his enlistment, in the Confederate States Army, he was mustered in with the Hayneville Guards, Company E, 6th Alabama Infantry Regulars (later Company "M"). While at the "Battle of Manassas," (July of 1861) he wrote a letter home describing the death of his nephew, Frank Haralson Browning (son of William & Susan "Gordon" Browning). He was wounded in the "Battle of Seven Pines" May 31, 1862 and later died of those wounds (a bullet wound in the belly). David is said to have never married.
The following is from a letter written one dreadful day in July, 1861 at Manassas, Virginia by David Gordon, Jr. to his uncle, David Gordon (brother of Major Francis Gordon, Frank's grandfather.) David Gordon, Jr. was Frank Haralson's uncle though they were near the same age. Francis Polk "Frank" Haralson, born June 29, 1841 in Lowndes County, Alabama was twenty at the time of this letter and never married, David, Jr. the writer, was twenty-five. "The 4th Alabama Regiment (with others from other states) was badly used up. Poor Frank met his death while in the act of shooting an officer (in the Union Forces). He and several others had been ordered to lie down to load and shoot; but Frank would not lie down, thinking that he could load faster standing. At this time the enemy was within fifty yards of them, the bullets flying like hail above and around them. Men on both the Union and the Confederate sides were falling like leaves from trees. Frank squatted down to shoot. Just at that time a ball struck him near the nose, passing through his head, scattering his brains all around. He died instantly. Hugh Haralson, Frank's half brother, was in the battle also, but came out without getting hurt... The boys who were with Frank said he was the bravest fellow they ever saw, and that he killed several Yankees before he met his doom." 1st cousin 3 times removed Fred "Ric" Gordon of Texas, fdg@flash.net - James McFerrin Key of Conway Arkansas. jimkey@cyberback.com

He is buried at the Philadelphia Cemetery, Farmersville Lowndes County Alabama. When Robert was 10 years old, his father, Gabriel Key, died while visiting Hot Springs Arkansas for his health. It is believed that he was in boarding school after his fathers death. In 1860 he was in Braggs Lowndes County working in Bob Twombly's Mercantile Store. I believe that he used his inheritance to buy a small interest in the mercantile store. Robert enlisted in the Hayneville Guards in March 1861 which would become M Company 6th Alabama. Robert was wounded twice, once in the Peninsula Campaign and once at Gettysburg. He served in all of the battles fought by the 6th. He was captured with the rest of the regiment during the retreat from Richmond by Sheridan's Cavalry two days before the surrender at Appomattox. Robert was paroled at Appomattox, returned to Lowndes county to married Catherine Rachel Moorer on 18 August 1865 and open his own mercantile store. The money to open the store is believed to come from the his share of the Twombly Store. Their first child, my father, James Gabriel Key was born 31 July 1865. Julius C. Lester died 5-31-1862 in the Battle of Seven Pines in Virginia. It is believed that Sgt. Lester is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond along with others who died in the Battle of Seven Pines, however, information from the Superintendent of the cemetery, O. Wayne Edwards, indicates that the J. Lester buried there was with Co. H., 26th AL. He is buried in Div. B, Row D, Grave #76. Though there is a J. Lester with the 26th, others believe, & I am inclined to concur, that this is misinformation. Efforts to find information on J. Lester of the 26th have yielded nothing.
Source of information on the Civil War record of Julius C. Lester - microfilm entitled Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who served in Organizations from Alabama - 6th Inf. Alabama Infantry, plus letters, reports & other Confederate records.
There are also letters from the Judge of Probate, Lowndes Co., AL regarding Power of Attorney, the Administration of Sgt. Lester's estate & the attorney, which are very difficult to read. In general they are simple legal statements of claim & repeat death information, rank, etc. There is also a statement showing the settlement of payment of outstanding monies due Julius C. Lester. From the book "Lowndes Court House," by Mildred Brewer Russell, in the Hayneville cemetery there 8 or 10 graves with soldiers from the Civil War, who with the exception of George Lee Mushat, were strangers. Also from the same book: "George Lee Mushat resided in the house near the southern extremity of the village (Hayneville)... Lee Mushat was killed in the War Between the States. From some reason his wife had not received news of his death. She was in her room sewing, when a servant came to the door and said: 'Miss Perry, Marse Lee is at the front door.' Mrs. Mushat hastened to welcome her long absent husband, and fainted when she saw his coffin borne up the steps.' Judith Perry Bohannon Mushat is found in the 1870 US Census, Lowndes County, age 51, living with Virginia C. Hardy, age 28. Contributions by Carolyn Golowka CGolowka@Prodigy.net

*NESMITH, Samuel P. (Major, Company M 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Samuel Perry Nesmith on original Roster of the Hayneville Guards, Lowndes County, Alabama. KIA May 31, 1862 at Seven Pines. Major Samuel Perry Nesmith was the law partner of James Willingham, of this regiment, also KIA at Seven Pines. They were in the Hayneville Guard together. As you know, Major Nesmith's heroic death during that battle is mentioned in General Gordon's reminisces of the war. General Gordon's memory of my uncle includes his "booming voice." One can only speculate whether my uncle, should he have lived, would have accompanied General Gordon in his meteoric rise in the ANV. Major Nesmith's gravesite at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond was not known to the family until about ten years ago when it was discovered after diligent research by the US Park Service. He had been buried under the name "Smith" rather than "Nesmith." It was my honor to be the first family member to ever visit the gravesite of Major Nesmith -- which coincidentally -- was on May 31st, the exact anniversary of the battle. I placed a miniature battle flag and Alabama flag on the grave. I was so overcome by the devotion and sacrifice of this ancestor, I that day assembled my papers and made application to the Sons of Confederate Veterans where I remain an active member.
