I have updated and corrected known errors as of April 2001.
Linda Peckham Scroggs

Mt. Gilead Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery is located about 12 miles
west of Dothan, AL and 6 ( miles north of Hartford, AL, on the Geneva / Houston
County Line, on County Highway 41 (also known as Hilltop Road). The Church and
( of the cemetery is located in Geneva County, and the other ( of the cemetery
is located in Houston County, AL. This is also located within about 2 - 3 miles
of the Dale County line.

I have tried to make a complete and accurate listing of the graves in
Mt. Gilead Cemetery. I apologize in advance, if I have missed any graves.
There are many graves in the cemetery that are marked only by rocks, bricks,
seashells, or ground indentions. There are several graves where the headstones
are damaged or have worn away and are now unreadable. The underbrush and tree
line has become overgrown in the oldest section, and graves may have been
obscured. I have found reference to Mary Bass Hughes (Aunt Polly( Turner, being
a prominent slave owner, and that many slaves were buried near the edge of the
original cemetery boundaries.

Mount Gilead Primitive Baptist Church and cemetery was established in
1838 (based on oldest headstone), on land which originally belonged to the
Kinsaul family, a pioneer family to Dale County, AL (the parent county to the
Geneva / Houston County area where the cemetery is located). The Kinsaul family
arrived in the very early 1820's. This land was donated by the Kinsaul family
to build Mt.Gilead church. The land deed states that the land belongs to Mt.
Gilead Church as long as a church exists. I have been told that the church was
originally a log structure which served as both a church and a school. Local
history has it that the church has been destroyed at least 3 times in its long
history, but has persevered and been rebuilt every time. The church was
destroyed by a tornado prior to the Civil War. It burned down in 1935. I am
sad to say, Mt. Gilead fell victim to a rash of rural Alabama Churches burned
by arsonists in 1996. Several headstones were also toppled, broken, and
damaged. The present day Mt. Gilead Church, has risen again from the ashes,
like the mythical Phoenix. It is now a small white frame structure that,
according to the sign, has meetings on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

My husband is a g-g-g-g-grandson of John Kinsaul, family head and pioneer
to Dale County.. We discovered the Kinsaul family connection quite by accident,
as the spelling on my husband(s family line had changed over the years to
Kinsel. We had the good fortune of being stationed at Ft. Rucker, Dale County,
AL, before my husband retired from the military. In 1997, while working with
our youngest son(s Boy Scout Troop(s (Troop 20 - Ozark) Genealogy Merit badge, I
picked up an 1850 Dale County, AL census index book, and quite by accident found
my husband(s g-g-grandfather listed as a 2 month old infant. Before that we had
no idea that his family had ever been in Alabama. Finding that one census
entry, has had a snowball effect. I have located several hundred Kinsel /
Kinsaul descendants and found a genealogical landslide of information. My
husband retired from the Army in 1999 and we have since moved back to Texas
(where his family line migrated to after the Civil War).

I would like to thank my husband Stephen Scroggs, and our sons,
Christopher and Nicholas Scroggs, for the time they spent helping me, on all of
those hot Southern Alabama summer afternoons.

I am also proud to say, not only did our son, Nicholas, finish that
genealogy merit badge, he also went on to pass his Eagle Scout Board in May of
1999 (while in the 7th grade!) And was awarded his Eagle Scout Badge on July
18,1999. He holds the distinction of being the 100th Eagle Scout, for Troop 20,
Ozark, Dale County, Alabama.

NOTE: Information in parenthesis added by Linda Peckham Scroggs
Mount Giulead Church Built In Year 1836

In the extreme southwest corner of Geneva County stands Mt. Gilead Church.  It is within 200 yards of the Florida line and was established in 1836.

This old church is just one year younger  than Corner Creek Church.  Mt Gilead is a Primitive Baptist Church and adherents of that faith from both Alabama and Florida have worshipped there the past 112 years.

Recently the members rebuilt the church with cement blocks and the prospects for another century of worship there look bright.

It is one of the largest and best kept rural cemeteries in the county and many people of the different faiths use it for a burial ground.
