Greetings from Alabama.  I am Margie Glover Daniels, State Manager for The Heart of Dixie Project. We need volunteers to manage the county sites who are willing and able to add data pertaining to the county they host.  If you are interested and have the necessary skills to build a web site please contact Margie Daniels.

We look forward to gathering and adding records to help researchers.  Due to the tremendous amount of work and effort it takes to gather, transcribe and compile information for the county sites I/we do not have the time to do individual research. We will do our best to provide you with the resources for your research by placing records we acquire and request you help in our efforts by submitting your records to Margie Daniels.

The Heart of Dixie: Alabama has no official state nickname, but "The Heart of Dixie" is prevalent and reflects the central role that Alabama played in the history of the South. A major Cotton State, Alabama also became a leading proponent of secession in the days leading up to the Civil War. The Constitution of the Confederacy was drawn up in Montgomery and Jefferson Davis took his oath of office in Montgomery, which served as the first Confederate Capital. The "Heart of Dixie" has appeared on state automobile license plates since the 1955.

  • Alabama Death Records
Wallace State Community College at Hanceville has the death records recorded by the state of Alabama from 1908 to 1959. The registration of births and deaths on the county level began in 1881; however, state-level registration of deaths in Alabama did not begin until 01 January 1908. Ancestry.com has a index to the records.  You can access the database free from a library that has ancestry. Once you locate the death certificate number you can order a copy from the library.  Contact the library for the amount you need to include in your order.256-352-8265
