My husband bought this old paper for me at a yard sale he gave a whole 25 cents for it . He knew it would mean a million to me . It was a paper put out by the Daily Press about the year of 1975 . It will take me awhile to get all the information this old paper holds about Greene County and it's people .

The year of 1975 , the economy continued its roller coaster ride .

JANUARY 1975

TWO NEW ALDERMAN TOOK OFFICE AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR . BILL RING , WARD 3 AND JOE McDANIEL , WARD 2 .

MRS. DOYLE RAY ROOFE , RT. 2 CORNING , GAVE BIRTH TO THE FIRST BABY ( A BOY ) OF 1975 IN GREENE COUNTY AT 5 A.M. JAN 1 , AT THE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL .

ON JAN. 6 , FORMER POLICE CAPT. CHARLES SMITH BEGAN WORK AS THE NEW GREENE COUNTY CHIEF DEPUTY SHERIFF AFTER SHERIFF MAX HIGGINS RELEASED LARRY TURNER FROM THE POSITION .

THE CITY'S NEW PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION DIRECTOR , JIM WELCH , TOOK OFFICE IN JANUARY .

JAN. 15 WAS SET AS A DEADLINE FOR PERSONS WHO WERE NOT LAWMEN TO REMOVE BLUE LIGHTS FROM THEIR VEHICLES .

IN EARLY JANUARY ELDON McDANIEL MANAGER OF THE GREENE-CLAY COUNTY EMPLOYMENT SECURITY DIVISION OFFICE REPORTED THAT THE NUMBER OF UNEMPLOYED HAD TRIPLED FROM 600 PERSONS TO 2,000 SINCE 1974 .

EMERSON ELECTRIC AND MONROE AUTO EQUIPMENT CO. ANNOUNCED SHORTENED WORK SCHEDULES AND ELY AND WALKER SHIRT FACTORY WAS EXPECTED TO MAKE A SIMILAR ANNOUNCEMENT.

DARLING STORE FIXTURES CUT BACK TO ONE FULL SHIFT . THE EMPLOYMENT PICTURE LOOKED BRIGHTER AT MARTIN SPROCKET AND GEAR AND ROYAL INDUSTRIES.

NEW OFFICERS OF THE PARAGOULD EXCHANGE CLUB WERE INSTALLED IN JANUARY . THEY WERE VELBA SPENCER , PRES. , JO LAIRD , VICE - PRES. , BETTY BUSBY , TREASURER AND JEAN INESS , SECRETARY.

CLAY FUTRELL , CHAIRMAN OF THE EIGHT MILE DRAINAGE DISTRICT BOARD FOR 19 YEARS , SAID EARLY IN THE YEAR HE WAS CONSIDERING RESIGNING DUE TO POOR HEALTH .

POSTMAN B.M. HARGRAVE , 42 CLOVER CIRCLE , WAS CITED IN JANUARY FOR HIS ACTION ON SEPT. 27 WHEN HE HELPED A WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN INJURED IN A CAR WRECK . THE POSTAL SERVICE PRESENTED HARGRAVE WITH A $200 CHECK AND A SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT CITATION .

CHARLISE COX , DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. DEAN COX AND KEITH WINELAND , WON OF MR. AND MRS. MARION WINELAND WERE NAMED MR. AND MISS PARAGOULD HIGH SCHOOL .

CLAUDE YOUNGER WAS INSTALLED AS THE WORSHIPFUL MASTER OF THE PARAGOULD MASONIC LODGE.

JACK BOONE , SEXTON OF LINWOOD CEMETERY , WAS HONORED BY THE PARAGOULD KIWANIS CLUB FOR SPECIAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND CREDITED WITH BEING IN CHARGE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY CEMETERY IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS.

A LAFE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER WAS HONORED AS ARKANSAS BUS DRIVER OF THE YEAR FOR 28 YEARS OF SERVICE WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT . THE AWARD WAS PRESENTED IN HOT SPRINGS BY THE ARKANSAS CHAPTER OF THE BUS AND TRUCK ASSOCIATION , WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.

FEBRUARY 1975

 

ABOVE - FEB. 13, 1975 , GREENE COUNTY TECH SCHOOL BUS BEING USED TO RETURN THE MORNING STAR COMMUNITY SLIPPED INTO BARD RD. DITCH DURINA A HEAVY RAIN AND WINDSTORM . NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND STUDENTS WADED WATER TO ANOTHER BUS.

THE STATE GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THAT SEVERAL COAL AND OIL COMPANIES ARE INTERESTED IN OBTAINING LEASES AND OPTIONS IN GREENE AND CLAY COUNTIES .

STATE REP. MACK THOMPSON OF PARAGOULD SAID THE SIGNING OF A BILL INTO LAW ESTABLISHING A PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY FOR ARKANSAS WAS THE BIGGEST THING TO COME OUT OF THE CAPITOL.

LEGISLATION WAS INTRODUCED IN FEBRUARY BY REPS . MACK THOMPSON OF PARAGOULD , KENNETH CAMP OF BROOKLAND AND JESSE HAYES OF POCAHONTAS TO INCORPORATE LAKE FRIERSON AND THE AREA ALONG ITS EAST SHORELINE, IF DONATED TO THE STATE , INTO CROWLEY'S RIDGE STATE PARK AT WALCOTT.

STONEWALL POSTMISTRESS CECIL MAE NELSON HAD TO MOVE THE MAIL TO A SISTER-N-LAWS HOUSE BECAUSE OF THE POST OFFICE WAS SURROUNDED BY SIX FEET OF WATER .

SHERIFF MAX HIGGINS VOWED TO RAID REYNOLDS PARK PAVILION EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT TO END DRINKING .
