HOMETOWN GIRL JANE MERIWETHER , GIFTED PIANIST COMPLETED HER STUDIED AT CONVERSE COLLEGE , SPARTENBURG , S.C. IN 1954 AND BECAME A GIRL WITH A CAREER , AS AN INSTRUCTOR IN PIANO AT SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE IN MEMPHIS.

CAR RODE DEATH IN 1954 FOR IT WAS THE CAR WHICH CARRIED DOSS FLANREY TO HIS DEATH AND MRS. CARL COLLAR , WHEN IT STRUCK LOOSE GRAVEL AT THE END OF THE CONCRETE SLAB ON THE WALNUT RIDGE ROAD.

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BRIDES OF 1954 WAS MRS. WILLIAM SCOTT AYCOCK , THE FORMER MISS CAROL JEAN WHITE , WHO WAS MARRIED IN A LOVELY CHURCH WEDDING IN EARLY MAY.

 

A WELL LOVED GREENE COUNTY PIONEER WILLIAM JONES DIED ON MAY 29TH (1954) AT 83 .

MISS PARAGOULD PAGEANT OF 1954 SPONSORED BY THE YMCC. HIT A NEW HIGH FOR A WELL PRODUCED SHOW . TOP COMPETING BEAUTIES , MARILYN HICKS , MARILYN VIRGEN , BOBBIE THOMASON , JANE MATNEY AND LUCKY BETTYE LOU WILBOURN , MISS PARAGOULD OF 1954.

JOHN J. MUELLER , CO-PUBLISHER OF THE DAILY BIG PICTURE ACCEPTED FIRST PLACE FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR THE NEWSPAPER TROPHY FOR THE BEST PROMOTION OF THE RURAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMING IN THE STATE.

TWO LONG TIME GREENE COUNTY TEACHERS WERE HONORED IN MARCH WHEN ELWYN LITTLE , COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERVISOR , PRESENTED LIFE MEMBERSHIPS TO MRS. CORA SCOTT AND MRS. LEE RAMSEY.

L.L. SWINDLE , WHO HAS TAUGHT SCHOOL IN GREENE COUNTY FOR 17 YEARS RESIGNED AS OAK GROVE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT TO MOVE TO HOUSTON , TEXAS TO CONTINUE HIS TEACHING CAREER.

CITIZENS WERE SHOCKED BY THE SLAYING OF MRS. JUANITA TATUM BY HER HUSBAND DEWAYNE TATUM ON OCTOBER 14.

TRAGEDY STALKED PARAGOULD MORE THAN ONCE IN 1954 . MRS. SUE TAYLOR , MOTHER OF THREE CHILDREN LOST HER LIFE AT THE HANDS OF A ENSTRANGED HUSBAND .

MRS. LULA GARRISON TURNED " JUST 90" IN 1954 . A SPRITELY AGE FOR HER AND AN INSPIRATION TO ALL GREENE COUNTY OLDSTERS.

A 1954 TRAGEDY THAT WRUNG THE HEARTS OF FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS WAS THE DEATH OF 18 MONTHS OLD SON TO MR. AND MRS. J. E. TAYLOR IN THE COFFMAN COMMUNITY IN A FIRE THAT ALSO TOOK THE TAYLOR HOME.

JAMES BEARD WHO WAS SECRETARY MANAGER FOR THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR ONE YEAR LEFT ON OCT. 1 TO ASSUME OTHER DUTIES. HE WON A WIDE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AND QUICKLY WORKED HIS WAY INTO CIVIC ACTIVITIES AND WAS GREATLY MISSED.

THE SPIRIT OF GREENE COUNTY IN 1954 WAS REFLECTED IN THIS GROUP OF HALLIDAY - NEW LIBERTY RCI CLUB MEMBERS TOOK AN OLD HOUSE AND RENOVATED IT INTO A CLUBHOUSE . WOMEN MEMBERS WHO DID THE INTERIOR CLEANING JOB WERE READING LEFT " EDNA PHILLIPS , PAULINE SCHUNG , LUCY WILLIAMS , OSCAR SNEED , DOROTHY PIGUE AND DOROTHY FAHR.

JOHN COLLINS , VETERAN THEATRE MAN PASSED AWAY MARCH 13.

POPILAR DIANE MACK BECAME THE BRIDE OF MORRIS FAIR LAST JANUARY AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BRIDES OF 1954.

MRS. LOU EVA GARRETT OF MARMADUKE WAS THE VICTIM OF A AUTO ACCIDENT .
