TRACTS FROM 25 TO 154 ACRES

-----

LITTLE ROCK , NOV. 27, STATE LAND COMMISSIONER L. L. COFFMAN HAS RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED STATES LAND OFFICE THE OFFICIAL PLAT OF CANE ISLAND , CRAIGHEAD COUNTY , ARKANSAS. IT IS NOW ON FILE IN HIS OFFICE. THE LAST SESSION OF CONGRESS PASSED AN ACT FOR THE RELIEF OF THE SETTLERS ON THIS ISLAND , AT THE REQUEST OF SENATOR J.P. CLARKE. THIS ISLAND CONTAINS 2,162 ACRES AND IS SOME OF THE RICHEST LAND IN THE STATE.

IT WAS SETTLED BY FARMERS OF THAT SECTION WHO HAVE MADE IT VERY VALUABLE . AS IT WAS STILL GOVERMENT LAND SENATOR CLARKE INTRODUCED HIS BILL WHICH GIVES THEM THE RIGHT TO HOMESTEAD 160 ACRES , AND THE TIME THEY HAVE HELD THE PROPERTY IS ALLOWED SO IMMEDIATE TITLE IS GIVEN. THIS LAND IS ON THE ST. FRANCIS RIVER AND A SLOUGH CUTS IT OFF FROM THE MAINLAND ON THE EAST . IT IS DESCRIBED AS A PART OF TOWNSHIP 14 N. R. 6 E.

THE CLAIMANTS HAVE SETTLED THIS ISLAND THICKLY AND THEIR CLAIMS WERE NOT MADE ACCORDING TO SECTION LINES BUT BY THE OLD SPANISH GRANT SYSTEM BY WHICH EACH LAND OWNER CLAIMED HIS LAND ACCORDING TO THE WAY HIS FENCES RAN. THE TRACTS CLAIMED RUN FROM 25 TO 154 ACRES . SOME OF THOSE WHO WILL PROVE UP UNDER THE HOMESTEAD ACT HAVE RESIDED ON THE FARM FOR MANY YEARS.
