JOHN THOMAS WRITES DR. SCOTT ABOUT THE HEAVY RAINS AT PIGGOTT MONDAY NIGHT.

MONSTER HAIL

J.H. THOMAS OF PIGGOTT , FORMERLY OF GREENE COUNTY , WRITES DR. F.M. SCOTT , FEB 22, 1909

MR. THOMAS HAD BEEN IN THE HOUSE ALMOST CONTINUOUS FOR THE PAST SIX WEEKS. HE RECIEVED A FALL ON THE 15TH OF JANUARY WHICH INJURED ONE OF HIS HIPS . HE WAS GETTING AROUND BY THE AID OF A CRUTCH, BUT THE INJURY IS NOT TO BELIEVED TO BE PERMANANT, MRS. THOMAS IS VERY WELL A GOOD THING FOR THEM SINCE SHE HAD SO MUCH TO DO AND EVERYTHING TO ATTEND SINCE MR. THOMAS'S INJURY.

THE THOMAS FAMILY HAD A VERY BAD STORM TO HIS PIGGOTT , MONDAY NIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT . WIND , HAIL AND RAIN ALL CAME TOGETHER AND DID A GREAT DEAL OF DAMAGE. A NUMBER OF HOUSES WERE BLOWN FROM THEIR FOUNDATIONS . A LOT OF WINDOWS AND GLASS FRONTS WERE BROKEN , THE HAIL FELL LIKE BRICKS.THE SIZE OF A MAN'S FIST.

SCORES OF HOUSES FLOODED RUINING THE INSIDES OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOMES. THE WIND WAS SO STRONG AND THE RAIN SO CPIOUS THAT IT WAS DRIVEN THROUGH THE WALLS AND ROOFS OF BUILDINGS . WE SUFFERED LOSS OF TREES , MOVING OF OUR OUT BUILDINGS AND DAMAGE DONE BY THE WATER.

THREE OF THE FOUR CHIMNEYS AT THE COURT HOUSE WERE BLOWN OFF AND AND TWO OF THEM WENT THROUGH THE SLATE ROOF AND CEILING AND LODGED IN THE COURT ROOM AND OFFICES , THE DAMAGE WAS THOUGHT TO BE ESTIMATED FROM $1,500 TO $2,000.

AFTER ALL THE CITIZENS ARE CHEERFUL AND THANKFULL NO ONE WAS KILLED , AND THAT IT WASN'T WORSE. OUR TELEPHONE SYSTEM IS ON THE GROUND AND WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH OF THE TERRITORY THE STORM COVERED.

WITH BEST WISHES

SINCERELY YOUR FRIEND

J.H. THOMAS
