GREENE COUNTY FAIR DATES TO BE OCTOBER 19 TO 23

EXCEPTIONAL EFFORTS BEING PUT FORTH TO GUARANTEE ACCEPTABLE EXHIBITS W.R. GARNER IS PRESIDENT

GREENE COUNTY IS TO HAVE A FAIR THIS FALL , THE DATES HAVING BEEN FIXED FOR OCTOBER 19TH TO 23RD . THE CATALOGUE IS NOW BEING PRINTED AND THE LIST OF AWARDS WILL SOON BE IN THE HANDS OF THE PUBLIC. W.R. GARNER IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION AND IS TAKING ACTIVE INTEREST IN THE PRELIMINARY WORK. THE DIRECTORS ON THE FRONT PAGES OF THE 1920 CATALOGUE SAY ;

THIS IS 1920 AND IT HAS BEEN JUST THIRTY-THREE YEARS SINCE THE FIRST FAIR WAS HELD IN 1887 IN GREENE COUNTY . MANY OF THE OLD TIMERS WHO WERE HERE WHEN THE FIRST FAIR WAS HELD HAVE ALREADY PASSED THE GREAT DIVIDE . IN LOOKING BACK OVER THIS PERIOD ONE CANNOT BUT MARVEL AT THE IMPROVEMENTS THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE. IN THE OLDER DAYS CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS WERE FEW AND THE DISTANCE BETWEEN WAS FAR. FOLKS CAME IN WAGONS AND IN BUGGIES AND PERHAPS IN OX-CARTS . THEY GOT UP AT THREE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING AND STARTED THE JOURNEY WITH EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY AND A LOT OF HOUND DOGS TRAILING AT OLD BECK'S TRACES. THEY BROUGHT THE BIGGEST POTATOES , AND THE NEST SAMPLES OF CANNED FRUIT FOR EXHIBIT. TRULY THESE WERE THE DAYS . THERE WILL BE NO MORE , WOLVES HOWLING IN THE FORESTS , AND CHILDREN OF THIS GENERATION ARE NOT FRIGHTNED OF BEAR STORIES AND TALES OF HUNGRY PANTHERS . TODAY IS THE DAY OF PROGRESS OF INVENTIVE GENIUS AND OF CULTURE.
