SPLENDID OLD CITIZEN OF HARRISBURG IN PARAGOULD THIS MORNING COL. MORGAN'S REMINISCENCES

JUDGE JASPER WRIGHT AND DAUGHTER , MRS. ASHCROFT OF HARRISBURG WERE IN PARAGOULD SATURDAY.

JUDGE WRIGHT IS ONE OF THE OLD TIMERS OF POINSETT COUNTY AND IS AN UNCLE TO THE LATE MRS. S.R. SIMPSON AND MRS. SIMPSON WAS A COUSIN TO MRS. ASHCROFT.

COL. MORGAN STATED THIS MORNING THAT HE BOARDED AT THE HOME OF JUDGE WRIGHT JUST FIFTY-TWO YEARS AGO AND TAUGHT ONE OF THE FIRST FINE SCHOOLS EVER CONDUCTED ON CROWLEY'S RIDGE . COL. MORGAN THE PREVIOUS YEAR CONDUCTED A SUBSCRIPTION SCHOOL AT CLAUNCH CHAPEL , MIDWAY BETWEEN HARRISBURG AND JONESBORO . FOR A PERIOD OF THREE MONTHS CHARGING $2.50 PER PUPIL .

THE COLONEL WAS YOUNGER THEN BY MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY THAN HE IS NOW AND HIS EDUCATION WAS NOT QUITE SO EXTENSIVE. HOWEVER HE HAD MASTERED A PART OF THE MULTIPLICATIONS TABLE AND BY HARD WORK READ FAIRLY WELL AND WROTE A LITTLE ABOUT ALL THAT WAS REQUIRED OF A SCHOOL TEACHER IN THOSE DAYS. FOLLOWING THIS SUBSCRIPTION SCHOOL HE APPLIED TO CAPT. E.R. KNIGHT , THEN STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC CONSTRUCTION , FOR TEACHERS LICENSE AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR WAS PERMITTED TO CONDUCT THE FREE SCHOOL AT CLAUNCH CHAPEL . THE CHAPEL WAS NEAR WHAT WAS THEN KNOWN AS BUFFALO LICK .

MORGAN BOARDED WITH JUDGE JASPER WRIGHT AND PAID SIX DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PERFECTLY COMFORTABLE ROOM AND ALL HE COULD EAT. HE SAYS BEAR MEAT AND DRIED PUMKIN WERE TWO OF THE ORDINARY DISHES PLACED ON THE TABLE . THE CHAPEL , HE SAYS WAS NAMED FOR DR. CLAUNCH A FORMER TENNESSEAN . AT THAT TIME BUT THREE SCHOOLS WERE BEING CONDUCTED ON CROWLEY'S RIDGE ONE AT FORREST CITY , ONE AT GAINESVILLE AND THE ONE AT CLAUNCH CHAPEL .
