F.M. DALTON OF RECTOR , VENERABLE EXPUBLISHER OF THE RECTOR NEWSBOY , VISITED OLD FRIENDS IN THE CITY THIS MORNING. MR. DALTON IS THE OLDEST EDITOR IN THIS SECTION OF THE STATE. HIS ACTUAL NEWSPAPER WORK COVERING MORE THAN A HALF A CENTURY. HE ESTABLISHED THE GAINESVILLE PRESS , THE SECOND PAPER TO BE INSTITUED IN THIS COUNTY.

DURING HIS NEWSPAPER CAREER, MR. DALTON HAS MET MANY INTERESTING PEOPLE MANY WHO AFTERWARD BECAME FAMOUS. HE LEARNED THE PRINTER'S TRADE AT HANNIBAL , MISSOUR , WHERE FOR TWO YEARS HE WORKED STICKING TYPE AT A CASE BESIDE OF A GAWKY , LANY YOUTH , SAMUEL CLEMENS , WHO AFTERWARD BECAME KNOWN AS MARK TWAIN .

TWAIN FRANKLY HATED THE DRUDGERY OF THE PRINTING OFFICE AND WORKED OFF AND ON WITH NO VERY GREAT EFFCIENCY . THE ONLY TRACE OF HIS GENIUS WAS A FONDNESS FOR MAKING DRY , HUMOROUS REMARKS AND A RESTLESS LONGING FOR ADVENTURES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. HIS DISCONTENT LET HIM FINALLY TO GET A JOB AS A PILOT ON THE MISSISSIPPI . HERE HE HAD HIS FIRST IMPULSE TO WRITE AND SECURED HIS PSEUDONYM , MARK TWAIN . THE PAPER MEN WHICH MARK TWAIN AND MR. DALTON WORKED WAS OWNED BY A BROTHER OF THE FORMER . IT WAS FRANKLY ABOLITONIST IN POLICY AND THE FIRMNESS WITH SUCH THE CLEMENS FAMILY ADHERRED TO THIS PRINCIPLE CAUSED THE PAPER TO FAIL . FOR TWO YEARS , MR. DALTON BOARDED IN THE CLEMENS FAMILY , WHICH CONSISTED OF MRS. CLEMENS WHO WAS A WIDOW , AMELIA CLEMENS , HENRY CLEMENS , ORRIN CLEMENS AN SAMUEL . THE FAMILY WAS POOR IN WORDLY GOODS AND SHOWED NO SPECIAL SUPERIORITY IN OTHER WAYS.

AFTER SAMUEL CLEMENS BECAME A CELEBRITE , MR. DALTON WROTE HIM AND RECEIVED A CORDIAL RESPONSE , WHICH WAS THE BEGINNING OF A CORRESPONDENCE WHICH LASTED UNTIL SEVERAL LETTERS WERE EXCHANGED . MR. DALTON STILL HAS THE LETTERS AND IS FREQUENTLY ASKED TO WRITE HIS RECOLLECTIONS OF THE GREAT HUMORIST FOR PUBLICATION .

ANOTHE INTERESTING EXPERIENCE WHICH THE OLD MAN RELATES WAS THAT OF GOING OVER THE COUNTRY WITH LINCOLN AND DOUGLAS DURING THE FAMOUS CAMPAIGN PRECEDING LINCOLN'S ELECTION . MR. DALTON WAS APPOINTED BY THE DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE FOR A RATHER PECULIAR TASK THAT OF LOOKING AFTER THE " LITTLE GIANT " WHEN HE GOT VIOLENTLY REMOVED FROM THE WATER WAGON . DOUGLAS CHERISHED THE NOTION THAT HE COULD TALK BETTER WHEN SLIGHTLY INTOXICATED AND SOMETIMES HAD WHISKEY IN THE PITCHER ON THE PLATFORM WHEN SPEAKING . LINCOLN WAS ALWAYS STRICTLY TEMPERATE AND DURING HIS ENTIRE CAMPAIGN NEVER DRANK EVEN IN MODERATION.
