J.P. WALTON AND C.C. CUPPLES HAVE BOTH ADDED MUCH TO THE APPEARANCE OF THEIR RESIDENCES LATELY BY GIVING THEM A NICE COAT OF PAINT.

C.E. ELLIS , A HUSTLING DRUMMER AND A FIRST CLASS CITIZEN OF PARAGOULD , REPRESENTING A LARGE ST. LOUIS FIRM , WAS CALLING UPON OUR MERCHANTS THE OTHER DAY.

J.B. STONE , E.P. HOLT , ARTER HOLT , GEORGE SHORT , AND A.H. MOORE , OF MARMADUKE , E.W. KING OF RECTOR , AND M.F. COLLIER OF PARAGOULD , HAVE FORMED A STOCK COMPANY FOR THE PURPOSE OF ERECTING THIS SUMMER AT MARMADUKE A $5,000 COTTON GIN. IT IS ALREADY INCORPORATED , BUT THE OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS ARE NOT YET ELECTED . THE GIN HOUSE WILL BE LOCATED IN THE SOUTH-WEST PART OF TOWN WEST OF D. RASBERRY'S RESIDENCE.

DR. R.C. CAVITT HAS PURCHASED THE ACRE LOT BELONGING TO M.B. HARVEY , OF PARAGOULD , AND SITUATED IN A NICE PLACE ON THE HILL, AND IS GETTING READY TO BUILD A FINE RESIDENCE THIS SUMMER. HE WAS FORTUNATE IN SECURING SUCH A DESIRABLE LOT.

D.M. VOWELL AND JAMES STUBBS HAVE FORMED A PARTNERSHIP TO ENTER THE LIVERY FEED AND SALE STABLE BUSINESS. MR. VOWELL WENT OUT WEST SOME WEEKS AGO AND BOUGHT THIRTEEN HEAD OF HORSES FOR HIS STABLE , AND NOW THE LUMBER IS ON THE GROUND , AND THE CARPENTERS ARE AT WORK AND SOON MARMADUKE WILL BE EQUIPPED TO DRIVE THE DRUMMERS OVER THE COUNTRY AND THUS BRING MORE BUSINESS AND MONEY TO MARMADUKE.

SHERIFF D.M. VOWELL , ESQ. R.B. JONES AND F.S. MARTIN , THREE UP TO-DATE AND MONIED MEN ARE NOW PARTNERS, AND HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT MACHINERY CAPACITATED TO GIN TWENTY-FIVE BALES OF COTTON A DAY ; AND WILL SOON COMMENCE THE ERECTION OF A COMMODIOUS GIN HOUSE IN MARMADUKE . THE STRUCTURE AND ALL COMPLETE WILL COST $5,OOO AND THE MACHINERY WILL BE OF THE MOST IMPROVED KIND TO BE HAD . THIS TRIO OF GENTLEMEN BUSINESS; THEY SAY OUR VILLIAGE HAS GOT TO BECOME A TOWN OF A THOUSAND OR TWO. WHILE THE INCOMING COTTON CROP IS BEING GATHERED THIS FALL , MARMADUKE WILL LIKELY OFF HER HAT TO RECTOR , AND INQUIRE "WHO IS GOING TO GIN THE MOST COTTON , DO YOU THINK? " AND THE COTTON FIELDS WILL ECHO AN ANSWER SOFT AND MILD , MARMADUKE.

WILLIE HARVEY HAS BEEN SPENDING A WEEK WITH HIS SISTER, MRS. ETTA ADAMS. HE HAD A GREAT TIME AND BUSHELS OF FUN HUNTIN AND FISHING WHILE UP HERE. HIS LITTLE SISTER , NINA , CAME UP MONDAY TO SPEND THE DAY , AND THEY RETURNED HOME TOGETHER THAT NIGHT.

J.W. HUNT DIED A FEW DAYS AGO OF A VERY PECULIAR MALADY. DRS. HUBBARD AND KENDEDY WERE CALLED TO SEE HIM , BUT THE DIESEASE HAD TOO FAST A GRIP ON HIM. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO RALLY HIM . AT THE REQUEST OF HIS FAMILY A POST MORTEM EXAMINATION WAS MADE BY THE DOCTORS CALLED IN. THEY FOUD A STATE OF THINGS , AND A CONDITION OF MATTERS DIFFERENT FROM ANY THEY HAD EVER SEEN BEFORE AND DO NOT EXPECT TO EVER SEE AGAIN. THE MEDICAL BOOKS DO NOT GIVE ANY INFORMATION THAT COULD THROW ANY LIGHT ON THE DISEASE , NOT GIVING A SINGLE INSTANCE OF ANY PERSON EVER BEING EXAMINED AND FOUND IN A SIMILAR CONDITION.

I CAN'T USE THE TECHNICAL TERMS NECESSARY TO GIVE TRUE DESCRIPTION OF THE MAN'S SYSTEM . BUT THE DOCTORS SAY THAT THOSE WHO SAW AND KNOW THE ACTUAL STATUS OF MR. HUNT'S STOMACH AND BOWELS , THINK IT MORE LIKE A MIRICALE THAT HE LIVED ANY TIME AFTER IT WAS SET UP, BUT HE DID LIVE SEVERAL WEEKS WITH THESE ORGANS BLACK AS TAR , AS HARD AS ADAMANT, AND OTHERWISE VERY WONDERFULLY ABNORMAL.

THERE WAS A GOOD RAIN EAST OF TOWN THE PAST WEEK, AND CROPS GENERALLY ARE LOOKING WELL. LAST YEAR THIS SECTION OF COUNTRY MADE SPLENDID CROPS AND WE ARE NOT SUFFERING FOR RAIN THIS SPRING. WE HAVE A CITIZEN HERE WHO IS A GOOD AND FIRST CLASS CHRISTAIN GENTLEMAN. HIS NAME IS C.H. ROSS. HE BELIEVES THAT IF PEOPLE WILL LIVE RIGHT AND DRAW WATER FROM THEIR WELLS WHEN IN NEED OF RAIN , AND SPEND A LITTLE TIME AND MUSCLE FLINGING IT SKYWARD , THAT GOD WILL CAUSE A KIND OF GRAVIATION OF THE CLOUDS TOWARDS THAT SPOT OF EARTH. MR. ROSS PRACTICES HIS FAITH ALMOST DAILY AND LAST WEEK WE HAD TWO NICE SHOWERS IMMEDIATELY AFTER HE HAD SENT A FEW TUBS SKYWARD .

REV. J.T. PHILLIPS A CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN MINISTER OF BODYSVILLE , WILL PREACH FOR THE MARMADUKE CHURCH ONCE A MONTH ON THE THIRD SUNDAY AT ELEVEN O'CLOCK AND AT NIGHT .

ROBERT E. GOSSETT IS NOW TRAVELING FOR A BOOK CONCERN. HE HAS A GOOD POSITION AND WE HOPE HE WILL DO WELL.

J.W. KELLY WAS ELECTED AS SCHOOL DIRECTOR LAST SATURDAY TO TAKE THE PLACE OF E.P. HOLT , WHOSE TIME WILL SOON EXPIRE . FIVE MILLS TAX WAS VOTED FOR BUILDING A NEW SCHOOL HOUSE AND A SITE SELECTED BY BALLOT FOR SAME.

DOWELL & BARHER SAW MILL MEN ARE NOW CUTTING AX HANDLES AT THEIR MILL IN MARMADUKE AND OTHERWISE MAKING THINGS HUM.

JOHN M. NUTT , OF GAINESVILLE, HAS RECENTLY SPENT SEVERAL DAYS IN OUR TOWN . HE IS A HUSTLER FROM A COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE ALL HUSTLE , AND WAS OVER LOOKING AFTER SOME BIG REAL ESTATE DEALS HE HAD ON TAP. WE ALL HOPE MR. NUTT WILL SOON BECOME A CITIZEN OF OUR TOWN.
