GREENE COUNTY FARMER REALIZES PROFIT FROM SPARE TIME WORK

*****

HOW SPARE TIME MAY BE UTILIZED PROFITABLY ON THE FARM HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED BY W.H. WILLIAMS OF THE OAK GROVE COMMUNITY , THREE MILES NORTH OF PARAGOULD , REPORTS JOHN STEPHENS , COUNTY AGENT IN GREENE COUNTY.

DURING THE PAST TEN YEARS MR. WILLIAMS HAS MADE BROOMS ON RAINY DAYS , AT NIGHTS AND AT TIMES WHEN HIS REGULAR FARM WORK WAS NOT DEMADING HIS ATTENTION.

MR. WILLIAMS HAS MADE AN AVERAGE OF 125 DOZEN BROOMS A YEAR DURING THE PAST TEN YEARS . THE AVERAGE COST OF THE BROOMS , INCLUDING WIRE FOR WRAPPING HANDLE , AND TWINE HAS BEEN 86 CENTS A DOZEN . ALL THE BROOM CORN HAS BEEN PRODUCED ON THE WILLIAMS FARM. TWO DOZEN BROOMS CAN BE MADE A DAY ACCORDING TO MR. WILLIAMS.

THE AVERAGE PRICE RECEIVED OVER THE PAST TEN YEAR PERIOD HAS BEEN FOUR DOLLARS PER DOZEN , LEAVING A RETURN OF $3.14 PER DOZEN FOR LABOR INVOLVED IN GROWING CORN AND MANUFACTURING THE BROOMS . ON THIS BASIS THE AVERAGE ANNUAL INCOME FROM FR. WILLIAMS BROOM MAKING HAS BEEN $392.50 .

FINDING A MARKET FOR HIS BROOMS HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM , HE SAYS . CERTAIN RETAIL MERCHANTS IN PARAGOULD DEPEND ENTIRELY ON HIM FOR THEIR SUPPLY OF BROOMS .

THE MACHINERY USED IN THEIR MANUFACTURE COSTS AROUND $140 , AND THE DEPRECIATION IS SMALL SINCE THE SAME MACHINERY HAS BEEN IN USE FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS.
