OLD WAYS SEEM BEST TO WOMAN IN COUNTRY

COLD WEATHER JUST DOESN'T AGREE WITH MAGGIE CAMP , WHO SPENDS MOST OF THE WINTER MONTHS NEAR A STOVE INSIDE HER HOUSE ON WEST GREENE COUNTY ROAD . BUT THE WOMAN , WHO'S CROWDIN '77 , ' SAYS SHE "DON'T SET AROUND MUCH WITHOUT SOMETHING TO DO,"

MOST OF HER TIME NOW IS SPENT QUILTING , A JOB SHE NEVER TACKLES IN THE SUMMER. NOT SATISFIED UNLESS WORKING , CAMP SAYS QUILTING " IS JUST A WINTERTIME JOB , I RECKON , 'CAUSE IN THE SUMMER YOU NEED TO BE OUT OF IN THE GARDEN AND YARD AND FLOWERBEDS. "

DRAWING WATER FROM HER WELL IN WINTER IS A CHORE TO CAMP , WHO 'WOULD RATHER STAY IN THE HOUSE OUT OF THE COLD." THAT'S WHY HER FRONT ROOM IS FILLED WITH CONTAINERS OF WATER.

THE WELL GETS MUDDY AFTER A BIG RAIN AND WATER MUST BE DRAWN OFF UNTIL IT CLEARS , A JOB SHE SAYS TAKES HALF A DAY . AIN'T A VERY GOOD WAY TO SPEND MY TIME , SPECIALLY WITH IT BEING SO COLD OUT .

WINTERTIME MEANS CLOSING OFF ALL BUT THE FRONT ROOM IN CAMP'S THREE-ROOM HOUSE , WHERE SHE HAS LIVED FOR 60 YEARS . SHE USES OLD RAGS AND TOWELS FOR INSULATION AGAINST COLD DRAFTS SEEPING UNDER DOORS.

CAMP SAYS SHE LIKES COOKING BETTER IN THE SUMMER WHEN SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO HURRY BACK TO THE WARMTH OF THE FRONT ROOM . INSTEAD OF USING HER WRINGER WASHER IN THE KITCHEN , CAMP WASHES HER WINTER CLOTHES IN A TUB AND HANGS THEM TO DRY BY THE GAS STOVE.

IF SHE TRIES TO DRY THEM IN HER KITCHEN , THEY MIGHT FREEZE. THAT'S WHY SHE STORES HER POTATOES AND CANNED GOODS UNDER HER BED IN THE FRONT ROOM.

OTHERWISE , ALL HER SUMMER HOURS IN THE GARDEN WOULD BE WASTED . EACH YEAR CAMP PLANTS A VEGETABLE AND FLOWER GARDEN AND KEEPS HER LAWN TRIMMED WITH HANDPOWERED PUSHMOWER.

WHEN THE WEATHER IS NICE ENOUGH , CAMP GOES TO WOODS CHAPEL METHODIST CHURCH WITH HER NEIGHBORS . WITHOUT A CAR , SHE DEPENDS ON THEM FOR TRANSPORTATION. "MY NEIGHBORS AND I ARE JUST LIKE A BIG FAMILY , " SAYS CAMP , WHOSE IMMEDIATE FAMILY IS NOW GONE.

SHE SAYS SHE REALLY DOESN'T NEED A CAR ANYWAY. ' WAY BACK WHERE I CAN FIRST REMEMBER THERE WEREN'T ANY CARS . AND WE NEVER DID HAVE ONE. WHEN WE'D GO TO TOWN WE'D HOOK UP OUR TWO GRAY MULES TO A WAGON.

CHANGE DOESN'T COME EASY TO CAMP , WHO SAYS ' I DON'T HAVE TIME TO GET LONESOME. ' NEVER MARRIED , CAMP PLANS ON STAYING SINGLE. ' DON'T SEE NO USE IN MESSIN ' UP MY LIFE NOW.'

BUT LIVING ALONE IN THE COLD MONTHS MEANS MORE SLEEP FOR CAMP , WHO IS UP ONLY DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS. ' SINCE I LIVE BY MYSELF THERE JUST AIN'T NOTHING TO SIT UP FOR , SO I GO TO BED.

AND SHE SAYS SHE DOESN'T LIE AWAKE NIGHTS WORRYING ABOUT THINGS EITHER. ' THAT DON'T GETCHA NOWHERE , A WORRYIN ' . ' INSTEAD , SHE LIVES DAY BY DAY , COPING WITH THE SEASONS THE BEST WAY SHE KNOWS HOW.

FOR HER , THE OLD WAYS ARE THE BEST WAYS . I TRY TO BE THE SAME AS I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN . JUST DON'T WANT TO BE ANY DIFFERENT.

CAMP HAS GIVEN MANY QUILTS LIKE THIS ONE TO HER RELATIVES . SHE HAND-BASTES EACH QUILT DESIGN BEFORE ATTACHING IT TO UNBLEACHED MUSLIN.
