DOWNTOWN PARAGOULD , ARKANSAS

“HUNS STOP FIGHTING, GIVE UP ”

THE FRONTPAGE OF THE NEWSPAPERS PRINTED THE WORDS ABOVE , THE WORDS THAT WERE LONGED FOR IN THE HEARTS OF OUR ANCESTORS . WHO GAVE SO MUCH TO WWI. THE ARMISTICE HAD BEEN CONFIRMED THE GUNS WOULD FALL SILENT AND EUROPE WOULD BE AT PEACE . THE WORDS " THE HUNS GIVE UP " SPREAD LIKE WILDFIRE TO AND THROUGHOUT OUR NATION TO ALL THE TOWNS AND SMALL COMMUNITIES.

THE NEWS WAS RECEIVED THAT HOSTILITIES HAD CEASED . IT WAS TO GOOD TO BELIEVE . PEACE , PEACE , PEACE ........

OUR PEOPLE FORGOT ABOUT THEIR EVERDAY LIFE , THEIR WORK , DROPPED WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND REJOICED IN THE STREETS .

OUR AMERICAN FLAG BEING WAVED , CHURCH BELLS RINGING , CAR HORNS BLOWING . TEARS OF REJOICE , TEARS OF SADNESS FOR THE BOYS THAT WOULD NEVER RETURN HOME , FOR THE SOLDIERS THAT GAVE THE EXTREME , THEIR LIVES NEVER AGAIN TO WALK UPON AMERICAN SOIL . SO MANY LIVES LOST , SO MANY LIVES CHANGED ,BEFORE , DURING AND AFTER THE GREAT WAR .

NOVEMBER 11TH WAS DECLARED ARMISTICE DAY BY PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON IN 1919 , TO HONOR THE SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR I . THE NAME WAS LATER CHANGED TO BE KNOWN AS VETERANS DAY IN 1954 TO HONOR ALL WHO SERVED .

THE PHOTOS BELOW SHOW HOW PEOPLE IN GREENE COUNTY CELEBRATED .
