THE CHURCH OF CHRIST , SECOND AND WALNUT STREETS FIRST FORMED INTO A LOCAL CONGREGATION SEPTEMBER 6 , 1885 , IN THE OFFICE OF L.C. THOMPSON . THE NEXT YEAR A HOUSE OF WORSHIP WAS BUILT AT THE CORNER OF COURT AND FOURTH STREETS .

FOLLOWING A DIVISION OVER THE INTRODUCTION OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN 1901 , MEMBERS MET IN A DWELLING OWNED BY W.R. SMITH FOR FOUR YEARS . IN 1905 A MEETING HOUSE WAS CONSTRUCTED AT 213 NORTH FOURTH AVENUE . SEVERAL YEARS LATER THE CONGREGATION OUT GREW THE BUILDING AND PURCHASED A LOT ON THE CORNER OF SECOND AND WALNUT STREETS . THEY BUILT A BUILDING THERE IN 1932 AND BECAUSE OF GROWTH ENLARGED IN 1940.

BY 1951 , THE CONGREGATION HAD GROWN TO ABOUT 400 , SAYS JAMES BROWN , PREACHER. AT THAT TIME 120 MEMBERS STARTED A NEW WORK ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF TOWN . THIS OUTGROWTH OF THE CHURCH BECAME 7TH AND MUELLER CHURCH OF CHRIST .

THE CHURCH AT SECOND AND WALNUT IS AUTONOMOUS AND CONTINUES TO REMAIN STEADFAST IN THE FAITH , SAID BROWN . WE SOLELY BASE WHAT WE DO , PRACTICE AND TEACH ON THE SCRIPTURE.
