Memories told by Buren Jackson

January 13, 2008

In 1939 we lived 2.5 or 3 miles south of Greene County High School.

I was in the 5th Grade.  Leola McDaniel was my teacher.  Her dad was

Sam McDaniel who was my Grand Mother’s brother.  On 1-1-39 We

Moved to what the hill folks called the “Bottoms” or 4 miles east of

Goobertown.  We actually lived in Yopp school district. I  was a 1 room

School and during any kind of wet weather the only way you could

get there was by horseback.  The teacher there had to ride a horse to get

There.  He advised Dad to send us to Goobertown.  It was a two room

School.  One through 4 in one room and 5 through 8 in the other.

There was about 45 to 50 in the 5th through 8th grade.  I had over

50 in my 5th grade class before I left  GCHS.  I felt lost down there.

My story when I was in the 7th grade my teacher came to me and ask

Me to be the janitor.  Build the fires in both stoves, sweep the wooden plank floors, keep

the stoves in wood during the day.  He wanted me to

Arrive at the school by 7 AM to get the fires as students started arriving

Around 7:30 AM . School started at 8 AM.  Remember I had to walk over

3 Miles to get there.  There were no such thing as snow days and here

Is the big one.  My pay was $6 per mo.  Your story a day or two ago I

Pulled up about another school had a like story.  I think it was Miller

School down north of Schug Town.  Buren Jackson   I sure enjoy

Reading your stories.
