HE HAS COMPILED YEARS OF RESEARCH AND HARD WORK ON ALL SORTS OF INFORMATION ON THE COUNTY , COMMUNITIES , FAMILIES , CEMETERIES , MAPS , SCHOOLS AND LOTS MORE OF INTERESTING TOPICS IN GREENE COUNTIES HISTORY THAT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED . HARTSOE CEMETERY HISTORY

HARTSOE CEMETERY IS LOCATED TWO AND ONE-HALF MILES WEST OF MARMADUKE ; ONE FOURTH MILE SOUTH OFF HIGHWAY 34.
THE CEMETERY BEARS THE NAME OF THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE LAND , MR. JOSEPH JOHN HARTSOE , SR. , WHO WITH HIS WIFE , MARY C. (BRYAN) HARTSOE , AND THEIR SEVEN CHILDREN CAME TO GREENE COUNTY IN 1853 FROM CHATHAM COUNTY , NORTH CAROLINA. THE LAND WAS GRANTED TO MR. HARTSOE BY PRESIDENT FRANKLIN PIERCE ON DECEMBER 10 , 1853 .
FOUR OF THEIR CHILDREN HAD DIED PRIOR TO LEAVING NORTH CAROLINA . ON MARCH 19 , 1855 THEIR FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD SON , NATHAN C. HARTSOE , DIED AND IS REPORTEDLY THE FIRST PERSON BURIED ON THE LAND . HOWEVER THEIR IS NO STONE BEARING HIS NAME . THE EARLIEST STONE BEARS THE NAME OF JOSEPH JOHN HARTSOE , SR., WHO DIED ON JANUARY 24 , 1857.
THE HARTSOES BROUGHT WITH THEM SEVERAL SLAVES WHEN THEY MOVED TO ARKANSAS . FOLLOWING THEIR FREEDOM AT THE CLOSE OF THE CIVIL WAR , THE THREE REMAINING SLAVES , "JOE" , "MARY " , AND A YOUNG NEGRO BOY , "HENRY " , WERE GIVEN A SMALL SHACK WHICH SAT ATOP THE HILL JUST ONE-FOURTH MILE EAST OF THE CEMETERY . "JOE" AND "MARY" ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED BETWEEN 1870 AND 1880 , AND WERE BURIED IN THE SOUTHEAST SECTION OF THE CEMETERY , ALTHOUGH THERE ARE NO MARKERS.
THE ORIGINAL CEMETERY CONSISTED OF FOUR ACRES , AND WAS COVERED WITH LARGE OAK , HICKORY , AND CEDAR TREES , AND HEAVY UNDERBRUSH . SOME OF THE CEDARS WERE PLANTED AS GRAVEMARKERS . THESE WERE MOST NUMEROUS IN A LARGE SPOT NEAR THE CENTER OF THE OLD CEMETERY WHICH IS NOW DEVOID OF STONES . THERE WERE AT LEAST 30 OR 40 HARTSOE DESCENDANTS BURIED IN THE CEMETERY WHO HAVE NO GRAVESTONES , AND MOST OF THEM ARE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN BURIED IN THIS GENERAL AREA .
THE FIRST ACTING TRUSTEES OF THE CEMETERY IN 1914 WERE JACK EARLY , ANDY CORBETT , AND JIM C. HOSKINS . IN 1959 AN ADDITIONAL TWO ACRES OF LAND WAS PURCHASED FROM MR. GOLDA RIPPY AND ANNEXED TO THE NORTH END OF THE CEMETERY.
MEMORIAL SERVICES ARE HELD EACH YEAR ON THE FIRST SUNDAY IN JUNE. THE CEMETERY IS NOW WELL KEPT AND IS EASILY ACCESSABLE. FUNDS FOR THE UPKEEP OF THE CEMETERY ARE OBTAINED FROM PRIVATE DONATIONS AND FROM PROCEEDS OBTAINED AT THE ANNUAL FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC HELD IN MARMADUKE.
THE CENSUS OF HARTSOE CEMETERY HAS BEEN RECORDED ACCORDING TO ROWS IN ORDER THAT ONE MIGHT BETTER LOCATE INDIVIDUAL GRAVES . HOWEVER , BECAUSE OF THE SCATTERED DISTRIBUTION AND THE DIFFICULTY IN ASSIGNING ROWS TO ALL OF THE GRAVES ARE PRESENTED HERE IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER.
LOOK AT BOTTOM OF RECORD FOR PERSONS KNOWN TO BE BURIED AT HARTSOE CEMETERY BUT ARE UNMARKED .
